christmas's warmth

Summary:

Lan Wangji's initial plan for Christmas were: buy a gift and stay inside for the entire day while snuggling his boyfriend close. Attending Wei Wuxian's fan-meeting is definitely not what he has in mind.

Notes:

hello, thank you for clicking this baby of mine! <3 this fic is apart of #mdzs2019ssfe that was organised by @dadwangji on twitter and it's dedicated to my santa baby: @pikachanloey.

i decided to make modern!wangxian as the au since i was afraid i am not too good in writing about them in the original universe. i might make more series about this au in the future, if i have the ideas and the wills to do so!

i hope you'll enjoy this unbeta-ed piece and have a good 2020 ahead! <3 i love kudos & comments and if you want a new mdzs/cql friend, my twitter is @wangxianesce!

Work Text:

“What’s your plan for Christmas?”

Lan Wangji takes a quick glance at his unlit phone screen, slightly lifting both of his shoulders in nonchalant manner before looking back at his brother’s face.

The restaurant they are currently dining at is unusually quiet today and while Lan Wangji appreciates the silence, he couldn’t help but wonder where the regular customers are. While this restaurant is not one of his favorite, Lan Xichen has always been a fan of their teriyaki chicken, explaining why they keep on coming back every Monday.

“There is a new restaurant opening today. Just a block away,” Lan Xichen hums, taking another bite of chicken with the help of his chopstick.

“Oh?” Lan Wangji imitates the hum, finishing off his own bowl of dumpling soup.

He is not even that hungry but a weekly lunch is a promise that he would never back away from, explaining why both of them are currently sitting in front of one another at LP, as per usual.

It has been an unspoken agreement between him and his brother: for them to have lunch together at least once a week ever since Lan Wangji moves out two winters ago, opt to stay at an apartment that is closer to his workplace.

Taking a quick sip of his tea, Lan Xichen continues, “Do you want to join me for Christmas? I am planning to go to Spain for a week, probably heading to Sierra Nevada.”

“Let me—”

Ping!

“Excuse me,” Lan Wangji mutters, wiping his fingers clean with the wet tissue provided by the restaurant first before taking a proper look at the Twitter’s notification that just came in.

@WWXStudio Tweeted:

Enjoy the warm Christmas with Wei Wuxian! Fan-meeting is happening on 25th December and ticket will be on sale on 30th November. See you there, everyone! Stay warm in this weather.

“Oh.”

“What is it?” Lan Xichen asks, fingers pressing on the buzzer that is situated at the center of the dining table, alerting any available waiter that he wants the bill.

“I don’t think I could join you for that Spain trip,” Lan Wangji smiles apologetically, realizing that even without this notification, he would still refuse to join the trip.

Initially, he was thinking of staying inside during the festive day, perhaps spending the entire time with the love of his life.

But, now that Wei Wuxian, the idol that he has been a fan of since 2016, is holding a fan-meeting on 25th December, seems like his plan need to be postponed to another day. He is sure his lover will understand it.

He is damn sure.

I could help you to get the ticket if you want?

Mn, no need.

Lan Wangji sets his phone aside, hand resting onto his computer’s mouse whilst double checking everything, making sure he is ready for Wei Wuxian’s fan-meeting ticketing that’s happening in ten minutes.

Two internet browsers that each has five tabs of the ticketing page? Check.

One separate tab that shows the current time so he can refresh the ticketing page right on time? Check.

Earphones blasting out Wei Wuxian’s songs as a good luck charm? Check.

It used to be an easy task, getting a ticket to any of the events that Wei Wuxian attends but ever since the idol acted in Oh! My Emperor last year, he has been gaining a lot of fans rapidly and steadily. While Lan Wangji is glad to see his idol slash actor getting love here and there, the ticketing has never been a smooth ride anymore.

He drums his fingers against the table out of habit, mouth humming along to the song that is currently playing while making sure to not lose focus, eyes glancing at the time every 5 seconds.

7:56:09pm.

Lan Wangji heaves out a sigh. The room is silent, apart from the Wei Wuxian’s song that he is currently listening to and he is glad no one is around to witness his incoming mental breakdown: the struggle to get a ticket to meet someone that he has always been cheering on.

He can actually feel the weight of his Sony A7 staring at him from across the room, as if that inanimate equipment has eyes that will constantly mock him if he doesn’t manage to get a ticket to the fan-meeting in a few minutes.

He has been carrying the camera around with him every time he attends an event that Wei Wuxian goes and he should probably upgrade it to a latest model that would definitely do a better job. But, the fact that this camera is the one who accompanies him to every location, every schedule makes he feels like he has a sentimental connection with the gadget.

Heck, this camera manages to catch every eye contact that he has with Wei Wuxian for the past years, he could not just simply purchase a new equipment and replace it.

7:59:49pm.

Hurriedly, both of his left and right hands move in sync, cursor frantically clicking on different tabs while left hand pressing onto the refresh button shortcut. He can actually hear the sound of his heart beating wildly, not a new occurrence as that always happen whenever he tries for ticketing.

He grits his teeth together when the ticketing page displays the ‘Buy Now’ button, waiting for the seating layout page to appear and at this point, he truly doesn’t care what ticket should he get. Being able to get one is already good enough.

With that thought in his mind, he clicks on random available seat but the pop-up: ‘This seat is currently being purchased by others, please select another’ keep on appearing right in front of his eyes and the time is ticking away. He has to remind himself that this MacBook Air is really expensive and he has no spare money to purchase a new one if he smashes it down in frustration.

“Huh?”

Lan Wangji’s eyes widening as he sees an available seat just three rows away from the stage, clicking on them while praying hard in his mind, hoping the pop-up window won’t appear again this time.

He doesn’t know which Lady Luck decides to bless him when the payment page appears, shaky fingers typing in his credit card details and as soon as the page redirects him to his ‘My Ticket’ page, he wonders if it will be so dramatic of him to shed a tear.

He glances at the time, feeling surprised that it has only been 15 minutes since the ticketing starts. From the way his heart beating wildly and the anxiousness, he swears he feels like it has been at least half an hour since then but well, at least he gets his ticket and it was a good seat too. That’s all matter for him.

Clicking onto the next tab, he types in ‘Twitter’ into the search bar and quickly taking a screenshot of his ticket, covering the necessary details so that no one can steal his ticket and/or find him during the fan-meeting day. He uploads it into his Twitter and take his abandoned phone away with him to the bed, typing out text messages to his boyfriend.

@PreciousBunny:                                       5s

Got my ticket! See you on 25th, @WWX3110.

“Mn, I am free after this,” Lan Wangji hums out his answer softly, closing the door behind him and making sure he hears the clicking lock sound before he shuffles away from the room.

He is truly glad that the fan-meeting is being held at an auditorium of a hotel. The attendees surely wouldn’t exceed 1500 people (he checked the auditorium’s capacity beforehand) and other than the intimacy that the fan-meeting will delivers, he has the chance to stay at the same exact hotel, doesn’t has to spend money and effort to go back to his apartment that is one hour away from the venue.

Since the event will only start at 8:00p.m. and the hotel’s check in hour starts at 2:00p.m., he has been spending most of the hours inside his room, taking a nap whenever possible to cover up how busy he has been lately. The music academy only started their holiday period yesterday since there was a guqin recital that were being held by the academy last night. It was a successful one, as usual, and he is proud that most of his students are doing such a good progress.

He chuckles, realized that he has been silent for some while, and humming out a, “Still here.”

His boyfriend’s voice is always so pleasant to listen to but he tends to talk too much at one time and Lan Wangji’s train of thoughts distract him from focusing over what the other male says, sometimes.

He remembered how his boyfriend just snorted into the phone call when he explained that he has to attend Wei Wuxian’s fan-meeting on this Christmas day and, oh, he totally, I understand your priority, Lan Zhan. Have fun!

They finished off the phone call a few minutes after as Lan Wangji is approaching the venue and while he loves his boyfriend, he doesn’t like to stay on the phone with him when he is at a public area, for some reasons.

Lan Wangji walks into the fan-meeting venue area and the sights of Wei Wuxian’s fans wearing snowy white outfits (the man himself said he hopes everyone will be staying warm during this season while wearing the said color outfit a few days back), explaining the beautiful sight. He immediately heads to the ticket collection booth, changing his e-ticket to a physical one before moving himself to a more secluded area so he could arrange the items in his mini bag better.

He isn’t sure if his Sony A7 will be allowed inside the venue or not so he places the item at the bottom part of his bag, covering it with a Wei Wuxian’s banner and his bottle of mineral water, power bank for his iPhone being placed on top of it all.

Another reason why he refused to change to another camera is because his current one isn’t that big, easy to hide and hold during any events. Considering that his seat is only three rows away from the stage, he decided to not bring any gigantic lens that might catch the interest of others when he whips the camera out later.

There’s an hour left until the event starts and while everyone else is already queueing up to enter the venue (he prefers to enter late if he already has an assigned seat), he takes his phone out from his jean’s pocket, tapping on the ‘Oasis’ application so he can look at some photos and videos to kill the time.

The first picture that greets him is his brother’s update, Lan Xichen, entire being covered with his snowboarding gear with ‘Sierra Nevada’ attached as his location. He smiles to himself, leaving a nice comment whilst trying to hold himself back from teasing the elder when he sees a picture of Lan Xichen with Jiang Wanyin, his brother’s close friend. He scrolls down further after that, internally cooing at the pictures of dogs and cats that he sees along the way.

He raises an eyebrow in surprise when he suddenly gets a notification, alerting him that someone tagged him in their photo post and when he clicks on the notification, a warm feeling spreads evenly inside him. One of his students, Lan Jingyi, updated a photo of them together during post-guqin recital. The younger male has been his student ever since a year ago and while some of his students ended their lessons after a few months, Lan Jingyi still stick around, wanting to learn more. Although, he wonders if Lan Jingyi is still there to study or he just want to spend more time with Lan Sizhui. Not that he has anything against that.

Lan Wangji pockets his phone back in when he hears an announcement, alerting everyone that they should enter the venue soon. He picks up his bag, face showing nothing, not even a smile when he heads to the entrance. He can sense the security people’s wonder over what a male like him is doing at this event, especially when his face doesn’t show any excitement.

He passes the security check easier when he acts this way, honestly. They rarely suspect him bringing any forbidden item and in no times, he already makes his way to his seat, resting himself down while waiting for the event to start.

The stage isn’t that big and true to his assumption, he is really close to the stage so he doesn’t need to put on so much zoom with his photos and videos later. He waits for the light to turn dim before he takes his camera out, silencing his phone during the process and the sight of a text message from his boyfriend, sending him a Have fun, make sure to take good photos!, elicits a small chuckle out of him.

He takes out the banner as well, placing both the camera and the piece of paper on top of his lap with the banner covering his equipment, leaning back against his seat as he waits for Wei Wuxian to appear. The sound of people chanting the idol’s name always bring a good kind of adrenaline rush to him, resulting him to follow along, eager and excited to see the one who he has been supporting since day one.

A soft instrumental sound of Wei Wuxian’s debut song, 曲尽陈情, resonates in the room that is filled with 1500 excited fans. Lan Wangji turns on his light stick and along with all other fans, they wave it left and right continuously, humming along to the lyrics.

Sudden additional melody that sounds alike to a flute sound surprises him, eyes moving all over the place to see where it comes from. The instrumental is all piano and violin, therefore, to suddenly hear an additional flute sound makes Lan Wangji wonders for a second.

There, heading to the center of the stage, is Wei Wuxian, fingers holding onto the said instrument with his mouth is blowing the air inside the flute’s hole. There is deafening sound of fans’ cheers around him but Lan Wangji pays that no mind, sneakily raising his camera up and the shutter sound brings him more joy than ever.

Wait.

His eyes widen as he observes the flute that Wei Wuxian is holding, fingers gripping onto his camera tightly once he realizes the structure and design of the flute. Red black flute with Wei Wuxian’s name engraved on the lower side of the flute. He knows the design by heart, he knows the feeling of that name against the equipment.

He gifted that flute to Wei Wuxian for his birthday a year ago ever since the idol says he is interested to learn a new musical equipment. And, of course, Wei Wuxian aces it well. Is there anything that the idol couldn’t do? Lan Wangji doesn’t think so.

He makes sure to take good photos of Wei Wuxian being so immersed in playing the flute, promising himself to upload the photos first thing first after the event ends so he can thank Wei Wuxian properly (probably, with lots of crying emoticons too) for using the gift that he sent.

The fan-meeting progresses forward from there. The multitalented idol welcomes each of them, eyes moving around the venue with fond and appreciative look. He is well-known for his sincere attempt to make eye contact with each one of his fans whenever possible and Lan Wangji feels the surge of excitement when their eyes meet one another, Wei Wuxian’s lips curling up higher than before.

After singing two of his latest songs, a drawing board is taken out from the backstage by the staff. They set the next stage up while Wei Wuxian converses with his fans, asking the usual question of ‘How have you been?’, ‘Do you enjoy my latest works?’ and Lan Wangji wishes he can answer the questions with the idol, one-to-one, so he can tell him that yes, Lan Wangji enjoys his latest drama and yes, he has been working so hard this year so please get some rest.

Well, maybe he will have the chance to say all of that later. Maybe.

He raises up his camera again, making sure they are at his chest level when the staffs move away from the stage, fingers clicking onto the shutter rapidly before placing them down again. Small venue means the security is able to watch the attendees like a hawk and he has to be extra careful so they wouldn’t catch him doing this forbidden action.

Wei Wuxian starts the ‘Guess what I draw’ section and it never fails to make Lan Wangji adores him even more. The idol not only know how to sing, dance and act but he is also talented in the drawing and designing field. He takes a few quick photos before covering his camera with his banner, choosing to enjoy the fan-meeting in a normal fan’s perspective more than a fan site’s, for this time.

He laughs along with the fans when Wei Wuxian draws a bunny, fully knowing that the drawing resembles the idol’s personality and face. Few lucky fans shout louder than the other, resulting them to win prizes that has been prepared by Wei Wuxian himself.

The fan-meeting lasts for another good hour and after approximately 2 hours since the event started, Wei Wuxian comes out with a comfy hoodie and jeans, signaling that this is the last section of the fan-meeting. He thanks all of the fans that come to the fan-meeting, apologizing for taking fans away from spending the festive day with their loved one and Lan Wangji smiles to himself, shaking his head slightly.

He makes sure to take other photos too this time, Wei Wuxian in a hoodie and jeans always make he feels so soft and he can hear himself cooing when he successfully gets another eye contact through his Sony A7. The event finishes off with one last song from the singer and a promise of another event soon.

God, Lan Wangji wishes he has the chance to tuck the man to bed and let him sleep for the rest of the year.

Lan Wangji gathers all his stuffs: camera, banner and phone as soon as the light turns on again and most of the fans stand up, moving themselves out from the venue with happy chatters all over the place. He remembers how he tells his boyfriend that he is free after the event and he make sure to keep all his belongings safe back inside his bag, legs walking faster to the exit.

The fan-meeting is a great success and while some people are leaving with the feeling of empty and sadness, Lan Wangji is feeling happier than ever as he rides the elevator back to his hotel room.

I am heading back to the room.

Ring the bell thrice when you are there.

I will! See you soon, soulmate.

Mn.

Lan Wangji places the towel back onto its respective rack as he steps out from the bathroom, body feeling fresh after enjoying the warm shower. He takes his MacBook Air and Sony A7 with him before resting himself down on the bed, back leaning against the bed’s headboard.

It has been half an hour since the fan-meeting finished but his boyfriend is still nowhere around him yet. He lowers down the temperature of the room, making sure to set the heater on and at the heating level that his boyfriend regularly enjoys.

He starts uploading the previews of the photos that he took earlier to his Twitter account, admiring Wei Wuxian’s perfect face and recalling the events that was happening during the shoot of the pictures. His fingers stop scrolling when he finds the picture of Wei Wuxian, eyes closed, playing flute during the start of the fan-meeting.

He uploads it, making sure to add another photo of that flute when it was still in his possession before gifting it to the idol, adding a caption:

@PreciousBunny tweeted:                                8s

Thank you so much for using the gift that I sent you.

Today too, I am always proud to call myself as your fan, @WWX3110.

500 retweets, 1008 likes.

He transfers more photos into his MacBook’s after that, uploading a few others with various captions such as “Bunny teeth peeking out!” or, particularly, crying emoticons, when he uploads the picture of eye contact that he shares with Wei Wuxian earlier. He decided not to open Photoshop and edit any photos tonight since it’s still Christmas and he very much want to spend it with his boyfriend.

Lan Wangji places his belongings aside when he hears the sound of the bell, making sure it being repeated thrice before making his way to the door, lips trying to hold back a wide smile. It has only been a week since they last see each other but he is always eager to meet the love of his life, no matter how long or short has it been since their last meeting.

The smile that greets him when he opens the door? Breathtaking.

He makes sure no one is around at the corridor first before pulling his boyfriend in gently by his wrist, lips not holding back any smile anymore as he widely grins, muttering, “Hey.”

“Hey yourself. Come here often?”

Lan Wangji rolls his eyes, closing the door and letting the click sound of the lock be heard first before he pushes his boyfriend against the door, lips instantly connecting together for a kiss. Or, two. He doesn’t know, he never really counts it anymore when they kiss. The kiss is always so addictive, ranging from soft to passionate to hotness.

Their lips parted after a while, noses nudging together shortly before Wei Wuxian dragging him back to bed. He has no issue in snuggling underneath the blanket for the rest of the night, especially in this kind of weather and he knows that the idol deserves a good rest too after today’s event.

He wraps his arms around Wei Wuxian from behind, palm resting against his boyfriend’s stomach as they rest down. There is a comfortable silence around them, minds processing the fact that they are zero feet apart.

“Lan Zhan?”

Running his fingers through Wei Wuxian’s hair just the way he likes it, Lan Wangji hums, “Mn?”

“Did I do good today?” Wei Wuxian asks.

Being the hardworking person he is, Wei Wuxian always wonder if he does a good job in everything that he does. Not trying to be biased since Wei Wuxian is the person he has been cheering on since 2016 and the person he has been dating with since a year ago, but he will always give Wei Wuxian the assurance that he needs, every time and anytime.

“Always.”

“Did you enjoy seeing me using the flute that you give?” The teasing lilt in Wei Wuxian’s voice doesn’t go unnoticed by him and he responds to it by giving a playful jab to the idol’s waist.

“What was it again? Proud to call yourself as my fan?”

“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji warns, always feeling embarrassed whenever Wei Wuxian quotes any of the captions that he put on his Twitter’s account.

The account has been created since the first day he purchased his Sony A7, devoting himself to be Wei Wuxian’s fan-site master as his part-time job (teaching his students guqin and loving Wei Wuxian are his main jobs) and when Wei Wuxian asked him about it during a fan-sign, he has never wanted to the ground to swallow him whole quicker.

“Are you PreciousBunny?” Wei Wuxian asks, fingers moving across the page as he puts down his autograph, writing a p/s message along the way.

“Wha—”

“I have my way to confirm it,” the idol chortles and when Wei Wuxian tips his head up so their eyes can meet, Lan Wangji never feel more in love, “Check the p/s message when you are alone later, don’t upload it to your Twitter though.”

The messy handwriting of Wei Wuxian, along with his phone number, makes the album feels both heavier and lighter in Lan Wangji’s hold as he moves back to his seat.

“Lan Zhan?”

“Mn?”

Wei Wuxian shifts around a little bit, making sure that he is facing Lan Wangji first before he utters his next words, “I love you.”

Lan Wangji smiles, giving his boyfriend a quick kiss on his forehead and he lets his lips rest there as he whispers lowly, “Love Weiying more.”

“Merry Christmas, Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian hushes out his next words, eyes closing in fatigue while snuggling inside the arms that will always welcome him home.

Lan Wangji watches his boyfriend falls into a deep sleep in no times, fond smile on his face as he reaches out the turn off the lamp on the bedside table, tucking the blanket higher until it reaches the area of their chest.

“Always proud of Wei Ying, every time and anytime.”
