Chapter Text
Touya sighed as he made his patrol round for the third time that day. The whole shift had been boring and uneventful for the most part. All he had done was help an elderly lady with her groceries and fed some of the stray cats on his route. Looking at his watch he saw his patrol was almost up and decided to finish the street he was on before heading back to the agency to write up his report. At least I’ll be able to get on with my weekend since I have jackshit to write about. Today has been such a fucking waste. I swear Edgeshot picks the most boring patrols for me on purpose. Touya made it to the end of the street and with no nuisances in sight he turned to make his way back to the agency.
“Dabi. Dabi do you copy?” Touya jumped a little as the receiver in his ear went off for the first time since he started his patrol route.
“Yeah, Dabi here what do you need? I was just about to head back to the agency.”
“I’m so glad I caught you in time! There is a robbery at a bank not far from you right now and the hero that intercepted it sent out a distress signal for backup. I’ll send you the coordinates now.”
“Got it.” Touya took out his phone to see the message from the agency’s dispatcher already there. He opened up the message and started to immediately run in the direction indicated on his phone. “Who sent out a distress signal?”
“Not quite sure. The dispatch center from another agency contacted us for immediate backup since the bank was on the edge of both agency patrol routes. I can find out and get back to you.”
“Nah forget it. I’m almost there, but thanks though.”
“No problem. As always, be safe Dabi!”
“Always. Over and out.” Touya pocketed his phone no longer needing the coordinates as he could hear the sound of fighting as he approached. Next to Touya a civilian flew by at an alarming speed followed by a few more. It was then that Touya looked up to see bright red wings as the pro hero Hawks tried to clear the area.
Below Hawks was a villain that was surrounded by rows and rows of spikes. As Touya got closer the spikes started growing and shooting towards the sky at him. Hawks was dodging the spikes as they came the best he could all while evacuating civilians. Touya caught a glimpse of two more villains. One villain that was throwing money outside the busted windows of the bank to the other who was then bagging it. Both villains looked normal so no mutation quirk to give Touya an idea of what they were working with.
Touya did a quick assessment to see that Hawks had managed to clear almost if not all civilians from the area. With the area cleared Touya was ready to let his fire go. He lifted up his hand and willed the flames that were always under his skin to come to the surface. The sudden change in temperature had caused the spike villain to look towards Touya just in time to see his outstretched hand and then nothing but blue. Touya let a large ball of flame engulfed the spikes that surrounded the villain leaving him open and vulnerable.
Touya barreled through the small opening he had left himself in the raging blue inferno so that he could tackle the villain to the ground. The villain had inhaled too much smoke from the fire that Touya created so he barely put up a fight. As Touya put the quirk suppression cuffs around the villains wrists the fire around them started to dwindle. With the spikes gone the fire had started to fizzle out as well. Touya had the villain face down on the pavement and his knee was on his back keeping him down. Suddenly he felt a breeze above him.
“Hey Dabi! When I called for backup I had no idea that I would get you. Now that is a real treat,” Hawks greeted with a blinding smile and some finger guns. Finger guns? Oh god. Touya just raised his eyebrows and looked around to see the other villains nailed to the outside wall of the bank with red feathers surrounding them. At least he can get the job done I suppose.
“Looks like you didn’t really need my help.” Touya nodded his head in the direction of the other two villains that Hawks had dealt with on his own.
“I would have been fine but this guy here and his damn spikes were a nuisance. But not a problem for you at all.”
“You can stop it with that. The answer is still no.” Touya got off the villain he had cuffed and stood him up. He started to walk him over to his comrades so all the villains would be in one place when the police arrived. Hawks had put his feet on the ground and followed Touya.
“Oh come on please! How much is Edgeshot paying you? I’m sure I can make you a better deal! We could even just have you come to the agency on a trial basis and see if you like it! Or you could do a working interview with me or something.” Hawks whined as he trailed the cremation hero.
Touya sat the villain down next to the rest of his group and then turned to look at Hawks. “Why do you want me at your agency so bad? You’re rising up the ranks at Number Three already, you have your own agency, and you did all of this while being the youngest to ever achieve such a thing. I don’t see why you’re trying so hard to recruit me. I’m not even in the top ten Hawks in fact the last I heard I was somewhere like twenty five.”
“Twenty-one acutally…” Hawks muttered into the collar of his hero jacket.
“Uh huh… anyways point stands that none of this makes sense.”
“I’ve seen you in action Dabi and fought with you on more than one occassion. You’re a good hero and you could go so far if you had the right person backing you! I have no doubt that you could follow in your father’s footsteps and be in the top ten some day!”
With the mention of Endeavor Touya’s mood soured and he narrowed his eyes at the winged hero. “I’m happy where I’m at in life. I’m not interested in the hero rankings or where I fall. I just want to help people and be a better hero than he ever was. Rankings don’t mean shit when it comes to how good a hero you are. You could be the number two hero for example and have the same moral compass as a pile of shit. Now fuck off Hawks and leave me alone.” Touya knocked Hawks shoulder as he walked past him.
Touya felt a heavy hand land on his shoulder and turned around to knock it off. Touya saw Hawks take half a step back and his eyes widen when Touya’s narrowed icy blue gaze landed on him. Hawks put his hands up in a placating manner. “Hey dude I didn’t mean to upset you. I meant what I said when I thought you could and deserve more recognition. If you’re not interested in joining my agency though I get it. But I think you’re a cool dude and I mean if you want we could get a drink? And I promise no shop talk.” Is this guy serious?
“You clearly just pissed me off and decide the best course of action is to ask me to go drinking with you?” Touya looked back at Hawks incredulously.
“Um, I guess?” Touya saw Hawks wings start to twitch giving away how nervous and uncomfortable he actually was despite his calm demeanor.
“Why?”
“First, off I clearly hit a nerve and I feel bad about that. Second, please don’t make me go on another ‘I think you’re cool spiel’ it’s not good for my reputation. Third, it’s the weekend and that’s what heroes our age do. I’ll buy.”
“You’re like four or five years younger then me... Plus obviously you would buy.”
Hawks wings perked up at the joke clearly excited that the mood of the conversation was becoming easy going again. “So… that’s a yes?”
Touya sighed, “It’s a maybe. You said ‘heroes our age’,” even though he clearly doesn’t understand what that means, “does that include others?”
“Yeah! Miruko, Mt. Lady, and Kaumi Woods to name a few. It’ll be a lot of fun you should come.” Hawks fumbled in his jacket pocket and pulled out a business card and a pen. He wrote on it quick before handing it over. “My cell number is on the back. Just text me if you decide you want to go and I can let you know where we plan on meeting up.” Police cars rolled up to the curb and officers jumped out to take the subdued villains into custody. “Well looks like duty calls. I can take over from here just be sure to let me know what you decide. And if you don’t want to come tonight that’s cool, but still text me so I can have your number okay?” Hawks rushed the last part that Touya almost couldn’t understand what he was saying. Is he blushing? No maybe he is just flushed from the fight.
“Can do bird brain. See you later, maybe.” With that Touya turned around and started to head back to the agency. Ah fuck. Now I have paperwork to fill out and it’s going to be a bitch since it involved another agency. So much for starting my weekend early. Touya looked down at the business card in his hand with the phone number scrawled across the back. Maybe I will take him up on his offer. Fuyumi keeps telling me that I need to hang out more with people from work. Maybe this will keep her off my case for a while.
