Kaito woke up in the middle of the night, the moon being the only one to provide light in that room, and the foot of another person embedded in his gut causing him pain.
Masa-san had the bright idea of that training camp a few days ago. Kaito had gone to others before, of course, but it was always irritating to share a room with other people at night.
When Kaito blinked trying to get used to the darkness, he couldn't help but frown in confusion when he discovered that the foot that had kicked his stomach belonged to no one else than Minato, who apparently couldn't stop moving on his futon.
And it wasn't until Kaito heard his irregular breathing that he did wake up for real and looked at him more closely.
Minato's face was bathed in sweat and his brow was furrowed as Kaito had never seen him before. His lips seemed to speak incoherent words that came out of his mouth in the form of whimpers and his arms and legs seemed not to find a comfortable position, they didn't stop moving from one side to another. Suddenly his hand came up to his neck in a moment and his breathing seemed so irregular that Kaito quickly straightened and stretched, without thinking twice, his own hand to Minato's around his neck, moving it away carefully but at the same time with firmness so he won't let go of his grip.
Minato's fingers didn't take long to entwine with Kaito owns and cling desperately to his hand. Kaito felt a drop of cold sweat roll down his own forehead as a small tear rolled from Minato's left eye to his cheek, losing itself in the comfort of his pillow.
He didn't understand very well what was happening, but it was pretty clear that Minato was having some sort of nightmare.
"M-Minato?" Kaito whispered in a very low voice so as not to wake up the others, who apparently still slept soundly without realizing that Minato was suffering an attack. "Oi, it's okay, calm down, I'm here. I'm here with you, I'm not letting go."
Minato's fingers pressed hard on his hand and Kaito tried to return the gesture without being so aggressive. The boy next to him rolled to lie on his side facing Kaito, and his frown slowly relaxed and the strength in his hand holding Kaito's increased, not long after, Minato took his hand that held Kaito's up to his chest where he pressed hard before returning to relax a little. Kaito reclined again, allowing his hand to be held by Minato as if it were not the strangest thing in the world. But it was fine, Kaito didn't mind the grip and preferred that to Minato crying because of whatever he was dreaming about.
Kaito doesn't remember how long he stayed awake until Minato's breathing returned to normal and his dreams seemed no longer to torment him, but what he remembers well, is how the next day, he was awakened by a loud laughter from Nanao and Ryohei, who apparently commented on how adorable their and Minato's hand looked while they were both sleeping and holding each other. Minato didn't take long to wake up too and when he realized that it was he who didn't let go of Kaito's hand, he blushed like a tomato and let go of his hands embarrassingly.
Maybe Kaito had to hit Nanao's face with his pillow so he would stop laughing at how embarrassed Minato was that morning, but deep inside he just hoped that Minato didn't remember the nightmare he had, or how Kaito helped him out about it.
