Strawberry Wood

Summary:

“Jungkookie, wait,” he exclaimed as he tried to catch up. Jungkook froze where he was when he heard the nickname. Jimin is the only one he let call him affectionate nicknames. He narrowed his eyes and sent Taehyung a look. “You can't call me that,” he said in a clipped tone before continuing to walk.

Taehyung looked caught off guard at his tone. “Why not? It's cute.”

“Because I don't know you so you can't call me that,” he sassily replied. He knew it was cute, but that doesn't mean Taehyung could call him it.

Or, The story of how bunny hybrid Jungkook met Taehyung, the weird omega wolf who smelled like wood and strawberries with no sense of personal space.

Work Text:

Jungkook sat at his desk located in the back of the classroom. His eyes were focused on the clock, counting down the minutes until class was over. It was his last class of the day and all he wanted to do was go home and relax. Unlike most of his classmates, Jungkook didn’t really talk to anyone so he had no real friends, only acquaintances. He was a bunny hybrid living in a world where werewolves took up majority of the population. He and his cat hybrid brother, Jimin, lived in a small run down apartment a few blocks from his school. But he wasn’t complaining. He liked their apartment even if it barely had enough space for the both of them. After all, it was only he and his brother against the rest of the world in his mind.

The bell sounded throughout the classroom indicating that class was over. He hastily gathered his things and carelessly stuffed them into his backpack. He grabbed his backpack then quickly left the class to go to his locker. Grabbing his gym bag from there he started to the school exit. Admittedly, he should have thought this through more. He struggled to carry both bags but at the same time tried not to draw too much attention to himself. If it was up to him, he would have just left his gym bag in his locker. But all his clothes in the bag were dirty and he had no more to wear for his gym class which means he was going to have to struggle the whole way home.

His ears twitched in annoyance as he tried to balance his gym bag in one hand while trying to stop his backpack from sliding off his arm. He was so focused on the task that he didn’t even notice someone walking up to him until their scent invaded his nose. Wood and strawberries? He sniffed before looking up at the person. He was definitely taller than him, hell he was surely older than him, and had blonde hair. He wore a big box shaped smiled and looked friendly. The lack of fluffy ears on top of his head and tail told him that he wasn't a hybrid. Jungkook would have been totally fine with him being so close, if it wasn’t for the fact that he was clearly a wolf who was a stranger.

He let out a small yelp before dropping both bags out of fear. The other’s brows furrowed slightly and his smile started to drop. His face showed a hint of concern. “I’m not going to hurt you,” he said in a deep voice. His voice was low and quiet almost as if he was scared Jungkook would run away. “I just wanted to help you.”

Looking at his face that was starting to show signs of sadness, Jungkook quickly muttered a soft “sorry.” The other’s face brightened up after hearing that and he reached for Jungkook’s gym bag. “I’m Taehyung, but you can just call me hyung,” he said while handing Jungkook his backpack. “What’s your name?”

A soft “Jungkook” was the reply he got. Jungkook was clearly still unsure about being near Taehyung but the other didn’t let that bother him. Instead, he gestured for the bunny hybrid to start walking in the direction he was going before quietly following in sync with him, albeit at a distance that made sure he wouldn’t touch Jungkook.

It was awkward at first, having a total stranger follow him home. But then Taehyung started telling Jungkook random things about himself. Jungkook slowly found himself relaxing the more he listened to the other talk. He couldn't help it; the elder's voice was soothing to listen to.

“I’m 18. I go to the college that's a few blocks from here. But I swear I'm not a creep or anything. I'm not like- trying to prey on you either,” Taehyung absentmindedly said before his eyes widened and he quickly added, “No wait. I don't want to prey on anyone. I mean… I- I have a mate. His name is Hoseok. I swear.”

Jungkook licked his lips nervously before asking hesitantly, “An a-alpha?”

“Dog hybrid. The only alpha I’m ever around is my pack alpha. He's really a softie though even if he tries to act cold.” Dog hybrid? Relationships between hybrids and wolves weren't unheard of but they weren't very common either. Most hybrids kept to themselves and tried to avoid being noticed. But Taehyung saying his mate was a hybrid wasn't too hard to believe. If anything, Taehyung was weird, a lot weirder than other wolves he's encountered.

“What are you?” He asked with a little twitch of his ears. If he wasn't an alpha than he had to have been a beta or omega.

Taehyung smiled brightly before saying, “Omega.” To which Jungkook nodded and returned his gaze to the street below them. He watched as they basically walked in sync and noticed just how much longer the other’s legs were compared to his. He let out a little gasp as he realized that the other was going at his own pace and taking little steps on purpose. Feeling a blush make its way to his face, he sped up and tried not to show a reaction when Taehyung suddenly looked puzzled at his increase in pace.

“Jungkookie, wait,” he exclaimed as he tried to catch up. Jungkook froze where he was when he heard the nickname. Jimin was the only one he let call him affectionate nicknames.

He knew it was cute, but that didn't mean Taehyung could call him it.

“You know my name, how old I am, that I have a mate, and where my college is. Technically you do know me. So I can call you that,” Taehyung replied with a teasing smirk.

“N-No I don't. That doesn't mean I know you. Those are just things you started telling me. I never asked you to.” He knew by this point his ears were drooping more than usual and that he had a pout on his face.

“Cute.” Was all Taehyung said. He spluttered for a second to come up with a reply before basically shouting out a, “No I'm not!”

“You're pouting,” he said before lightly poking Jungkook's cheek. Jungkook flushed red and decided it was time to change the subject and give his face a break.

“So… Hoseok? You have a hybrid in your pack?” He questioned. Taehyung nodded, “Yep. He's not the only one. There's also Jin hyung. He's a fox hybrid. Honestly, he's lowkey the one who keeps our pack in check and makes sure we're staying out of trouble. He's the oldest so almost anything he says, goes.”

“But your alpha is the one who should do all of that. He's the one that should make the final decisions,” Jungkook said. Taehyung only smiled and squished his cheeks together yelling out a “cute!” to which Jungkook whined at. He shoved the omega away from him and put some distance between them.

“In our pack, everyone's treated equally. My pack alpha only makes final decisions if it has to do with the safety of our pack or if it's a serious topic. Other than that, Jin hyung basically runs the house which is a good thing because without him, we'd all starve.”

Jungkook nodded in reply. Taehyung's pack seemed nice. A little weird but overall nice. “What are your other pack members like?” He asked. He looked at Taehyung and gave him his full attention. His big doe eyes depicted just how curious he was to know more.

“Yoongi hyung is the pack alpha but he lets Jin hyung deal with all of us. He's really short but if you make him mad, he'll rip you apart. But once you get to know him, you realize just how much he cares. Even if he has a funny way of showing it.” Taehyung started. “Then there's Namjoon hyung. He's the smartest person I know but also the clumsiest. He can solve math problems and riddles so quick but then end up knocking something down or breaking it.”

“He sounds dangerous to be around,” Jungkook wondered out loud. Taehyung only laughed before continuing. “That's why he's banned from the kitchen.”

“What about your mate? What's he like?” he swore he could literally see hearts form in Taehyung's eyes after asking that question. He didn't think it was possible but the others smile got even bigger than it was before.

“He's the sweetest person you'll ever meet. He's loud and hyperactive but he also knows when to be quiet. He's really funny and brings so much happiness to our house. He really loves cuddles and no one can turn him down when he asks for them. Yoongi hyung can't even do it which is a big deal since he likes his space.” Taehyung gushed and Jungkook couldn’t stop the big smile that formed on his face. The other stopped and looked at him with a stunned look on his face.

Jungkook immediately looked down embarrassed. He knew his smile showed off his bunny teeth and that usually caused people to tease him. Teasing him then transformed into them pulling on his ears. However, Taehyung didn't do that. He put a finger under the younger ones chin and lightly guided his head up to make eye contact. “You have the prettiest smile. It shows off your cute teeth. You shouldn't hide it or be ashamed to show them off.”

He didn't know what to say to that so he looked away. He glanced over and saw his apartment complex in front of them and turned towards Taehyung. “This is my building.”

The other looked a bit disappointed but nodded and handed over his gym bag. Jungkook stood awkwardly in front of him not knowing what to say while Taehyung silently looked at him with an amused look in his eyes. He was clearly aware of Jungkook's internal conflict but wasn't about to help him out.

“Thank you... hyung,” Jungkook eventually let out before quickly trying to make his way inside the building. A soft grip on his arm stopped him and made him turn his gaze towards the other. He had a soft smile on his face and said, “I'll walk you home tomorrow.”

Jungkook nodded before the grip let up. He turned and made his way inside. For the longest time, it was only him and Jimin but now- now he thought that maybe, just maybe, it would be him, Jimin, and Taehyung.

Because surely Taehyung would be in the picture for a while. Not that he minded.

Notes:

A quick one shot I decided to do. It's ultimately a deleted scene from my other story but I decided to post it separately.
