Summary
Every three months as the full moon approaches, a monster appears in the resort ski town of Kepler, West Virginia. Some are physically strong, some excel at mind-control, others control the elements, but all of them are deadly. For nearly thirty years a local underground organization—The Pine Guard—has worked to keep these monsters under control, and hidden from the public. But now, a new generation of abominations has begun to terrorize Kepler, growing hungrier and stronger with each passing full moon.
With this new generation of monsters, the Pine Guard must acquire a new generation of recruits. Who answers the call? A park ranger with an odd secret, a stage magician who may or may not have actual magic powers, and a thief-turned-curator of Kepler’s local cryptid museum. The newest members of the Pine Guard must find exactly where these monsters come from, and find a way to stop them for good—before it’s too late.

Every year, the towns surrounding the Sylph Mountains must sacrifice one human per town to keep the monsters that haunt them satisfied and at bay. They choose the citizens that they deem to be inconvenient- deviants. Disgraces. Nobody knows what happens to these sacrifices, but everybody knows that they are never heard from again.
AUBREY LITTLE is a young lady who’s been avoiding the festival that celebrates these sacrifices, until she meets DANI, a mysterious and enchanting newcomer.
JOSEPH STERN has a secret, one which could get him sacrificed. Luckily, he’s a careful man, and so is his friend, BARCLAY... aren’t they?
DUCK NEWTON is a man who loves the woods more than he can say, but he definitely doesn’t love deterring festival guests away from going missing in them when they wander off the beaten path. And he may not love this strange character who’s popped up in the supposedly haunted part of the woods.

At first Agent Stern had found it easier to compartmentalize, to view Barclay as merely another source of potential information who just happened to be a broad-chested tree of a man with pretty brown eyes and bone structure that was completely unfair. But over the months, over the course of their myriad small conversations, it had become harder to see Barclay as a mark and much easier to see him as a friend. More recently, he had caught himself hoping for more than friendship. And that was a bit of a problem.
