Rodrigue lingered in the hallway where the children’s rooms of the Chateau had always been, and felt as though the walls had grown thick and unfamiliar, as if the dangers they hid from him were innumerable, and they were no longer the sturdy stone protectors of his youth.
He wondered if his father had ever felt this way, or any other ancestor that he hadn’t thought to ask, or whom he’d been incapable of asking.
