It’s not just him – though you definitely are more attuned to your necromancer’s scent than anyone else’s – you’ve always been able to smell a little better than most people, even other alphas, and the number of times you’ve smelled a suppressed rut or heat – or an unsuppressed one a day or so before anyone else could – is high enough that you never question anymore whether or not you’re imagining things.
He’d been a late bloomer, of course. Necromancers often are, especially the more powerful ones, and his soft, warm childhood scent had remained strong – heightening your protective instincts – until he’d had his first rut at the very advanced age of eighteen. He’d hit a growth spurt at the same time, as is also common, and while it hadn’t been much, the combination of him growing to chin height and losing the last remaining bit of baby fat on his face and the sudden shift in his scent had begun to drive you insane right from that first rut.
Except, not in the way one might expect, from another alpha.
