Chapter Text
You could say you would rather be anywhere than here right now. After hearing May wake up in her room, you wrote a quick note to Peter and left to go to your place. Immediately you noticed all the signs that Matt was inside.
By noticed you mean your neighbor warned you (that Matt no doubt heard) and Blink texted that she dropped your bags off, seeing him dead asleep in your apartment.
Out of spite, you talked a while longer with your neighbor, greeting her daughter and letting Princess Peach slink around your legs before going inside. You see Matt pause his pacing and face you, his rumpled appearance and blanket strewn on the couch along with his blazer bundled up as a makeshift extra pillow. “I’m, uh, sorry I broke in. Sort of. I still had a key.” He pointed out and fiddled with his cuffs, looking back at the couch then turning back to you.
Dumb. It’s so dumb that he managed to look so soft and cute after sleeping waiting for you to come back home.
Sighing, you mutter for him to follow you into the bedroom. Grabbing your bags from the loveseat, you open them up and begin peeling off your X-Men suit. He chokes and turns away, not sensing the usual clothing that’s under your regular suits. You could safely say your X-Men suit deserves its own warning despite any adjustments you made. The new suit might be tight, but with the armored undertop and extra hidden weapons, it’s still a bit loose in some places. This suit, on the other hand, is tight .
A gift and a curse, really. You get chafing twice as much compared to the Lineup suit.
Changing into some pajamas and tossing the bags into the closet, you sit on the edge of the bed and test him. “How’s Peter doing?” Matt clears his throat and replies, “Fine as far as I know. He’s had some trouble with criminals tracking weapons used in the Battle of New York, but I told him to hold off on it.” Sensing your fists clenching and your body showing all the signs of growing distress, he pauses. He didn’t even know. Peter had a breakdown and he didn’t know . Before he could ask, you cover your mouth as tears fall down your face. Matt rushes over and brings you close to his chest as you begin, “Peter called me yesterday night in a panic because a fucking building fell on top of him. He cried in my arms because he was terrified and rightly so, our kid almost died. But what hurt the most was not seeing him cry out of pure fear, no. No, it was the fact that I thought I could entrust him to the one man who could save him or at least help Bai- Peter through it. What was that man doing? Not answering his phone because he was on a date.”
Matt stilled, hearing it all and the little name mishap that made you cry harder. He rubs your back and mutters apologies into your ear, not even noticing tears falling down his cheeks until you turn to face him. You take off his glasses and rub the tears off, breathing deeply to manage yourself.
“I don’t care if you stopped having feelings for me, it happens. What matters is that you abandoned Peter. Are you just going to stab him in the back because we don’t get together?”
He shakes his head furiously, hugging you tighter to his chest and admits, “It was wrong for me to do it. Going on that date with Karen and leading her on, ignoring Peter’s calls sometimes, feeling jealous over your ex. I just got overwhelmed and I went into self-sabotage mode.” Sniffling, you laugh and reply, “Though, I don’t blame you for kissing Karen. If you could see her compared to me, you’d leave me in an instant. She practically looks angelic.”
He kisses your jaw and whispers your name as if it’s a sacred prayer before telling you firmly, “You. I want you, just you. I don’t need to see because I’d choose you every time. I’m sorry, Lye. You’re everything for me and I should’ve never done anything to jeopardize it.” You grip his hair and nod, nosing at his neck as Matt breathes deeply. After a few moments of clutching each other, he breaks the silence.
“I should probably apologize to them.”
“Yes. You should.”
“Hm. I’ll think of ideas later.”
Walking out of the room and trying not to wake him up, you get your phone from the living room to see a text from Peter.
happy just called and said i needed to go to the avengers facility upstate!!!
he said its ok if u come cos mr stark wanted to talk to u 2 ?? :00 !!
cn u make it
You reluctantly reply with an agreement, and he texts you back a time to meet at his place. Grabbing some snacks and water, you walk back in to see Matt sitting up on the bed with his fingers trailing over the silk. You take in his disheveled state with only the sheets as cover, pooled around his waist as bruises are littered around his body. He faces you with a relaxed grin and catches the orange you toss at him.
After talking more about it, you finally have a grasp on his personality. It’s a mix of everything and nothing at all. He displays being charming, snarky, and leading the entire relationship before pushing him away in his guilt. But on the other hand, he needs constant reassurance that he’s loved and that you won’t leave him. So, you made him text Karen and Peter, apologize profusely for his actions and for leading her on, and then promising to make it up to them.
Then he made it up to you.
All of this is not an excuse for this little miscommunication error, but at least now he’s more willing to speak about his feelings and wants. Specifically with requesting you to call him pet names at all times and play with his hair (to which he practically begins to melt in your arms).
Tossing more snacks directly at his head, he looks mildly amused while catching them until you throw multiple at the same time, causing one to hit him right on the forehead.
“That’s ableist.” He grumbles, chewing on a piece as you roll your eyes and kiss his forehead as an apology. A dopey smile grows on his face as you get back in bed before hesitantly bringing up the text. “So. Apparently Stark asked Peter to go to their facility upstate for something.” His smile fell as his eyebrows furrowed, feeling that there was more to the sentence and gestured to you to continue. “Stark apparently asked me to go, too.” Stilling, he grits his teeth at the idea for a moment till he nods. You rub his shoulder and reply, “Glad you didn’t say anything because you know in this situation you’re a bitch, too.”
“We barely started dating and you’re already criticizing me.”
“Of course. I have a list.”
You hate waking up early in the morning. Holding Peter’s hand, you relax at the sounds of his excited chatter. “So you did all this, but you couldn’t change your eyes?”
“Contacts melt your eyes and let the government see into your brain, kid.” You replied in fake seriousness, adjusting your sunglasses and winking. Maybe you’re a bit paranoid. Wearing a wig, clothing layers to hide your body shape/any distinct scars, and Peter’s favorite, a voice synthesizer the two of you made. Peter chuckles at your different tone of voice and reminds you of the opposite reaction you had with Matt when you showed it.
“I can hear…it’s a sort of gurgle of static in the back of your voice? If I didn’t focus on it with my hearing, I wouldn’t be able to tell. Spooky.” He mock-shudders, laughing when you whine about it being ‘state of the art’ as if you and Peter didn’t make it with some scraps you bought off of a sketchy website.
“Oh! That’s him!” Peter said and used his free hand to wave at Happy who looked exhausted just by Peter’s giddy body language. He greets the two of you tiredly before Peter introduces you with a fake name, “But you can call them Lye, if you want.”
Looking at him blankly in the mirror, you grumble, “Lineup is fine.” Peter winces and looks apologetically at Happy. He nods and ignores the blatant hostility in your ‘voice’.
Can’t say you expected anything less from a hyperactive superpowered fifteen-year old kid. He draws on your arms, rants about his favorite shows, plays games on his phone, and just texts his friends. After a good hour and a half, you get out of the car and put your jacket back on to hide the doodles. Pausing at a window, Peter looks in awe at the sight of one of the Avengers’ aircrafts flying off. You feel mild reminiscence over the X-Men, remembering the hurried suiting up and adrenaline in your veins as you went through plans for missions. “Bet you don’t see that everyday.” Happy remarks, smiling at Peter and sparing a look at you as you hum in thought till your body tenses at the sight of the man walking behind Happy.
Peter snaps his head towards you, hearing you stride forward the second Tony stated, “Oh! There they are.” Grabbing your waist instantly, the teen lifts you up and pulls you a good distance away as he ignores your snarling and snapping of teeth.
“No! Bad Lineup! We agreed on no physical, emotional, or mental harm towards Mr. Stark!”
Tony whose eyes widened at your sudden personality, taking a hesitant step back. “Is this what Fantomex meant by you having the Feral gene as your actual mutation?” Peter says in distress.
You paused, stilling in his arms. “Is he gossiping about me? Wait, when did you even speak to him? Actually, that’s not important right now.”
Quickly squirming out of Peter’s hold, you brushed off fake dust on yourself before turning towards Tony again. “How dare you. You should be fucking ashamed for how you treated him, regardless on how Peter reacted,” You seethed, ignoring Peter’s noises to continue, “You manipulated his admiration for you by omitting details about your little battle to get a child to fight and gave him gifts like the new suit to secure his place with you. Then what? You take it away the second he disagrees with you without teaching him anything.”
“And what have you been doing, huh? Teaching him how to send people to the hospital, showing him how to permanently paralyze men from the waist down like your best friend Magneto?”
Oh that’s it.
You saw green bubbling in your eyes and swung, landing a few hits before attempting to launch yourself at him. Peter, without thinking, kicked you in the face so hard a loud crack echoed in the room. You flew back, quickly flipping to get back on your feet and grabbed the sunglasses that fell off your face.
“ ENOUGH! ” A woman’s voice fumed, anger and exasperation clear in her voice. You realized who it was and immediately froze when Pepper cleared her throat to get your attention. You didn’t even notice she arrived, nor the slow drip of blood from your nose till she pulled out a handkerchief and handed it to you, gesturing to your face. Huh. That makes sense on the throbs of pain and noise you heard. Standing up and taking it, you turn to look at her with a glance at the other man.
Peter looks guilty at the sight of your nose and Tony…isn’t better off. You can see him touching his bloody jaw and wincing. Can’t say you feel guilty.
She began, “I’m sorry. Tony should have never brought Peter to that fight, you’re right. It was a mistake to put a child in that environment in the first place, regardless of his powers or not.” You relaxed and nodded, unclenching your fists as Tony looked mildly ashamed. Pepper continued softer, “It was a situation with high tensions and no one was thinking clearly. It should’ve never happened.”
Glancing at Peter, you step closer and murmur, “Alright. But if he ever mentions Charles or Magneto again , it’s free reign.” Pepper hums in agreement, ignoring the offended noise Tony makes. Peter moves next to you as Tony breathes deeply and says awkwardly, “I forget sometimes, that he really is a kid. I…I have no excuse.” After that, it’s a slowly easing conversation till you notice Tony looking antsy, heels rocking back and forth. “Do you mind if I talk to Peter alone for a few minutes?” He asks and smiles gently when you nod, kissing the teen’s forehead before leaving. Peter watches you walk away, struggling not to laugh when hearing you hiss out a curse as you attempt to put on your sunglasses and forget your new broken nose. Moving quickly through the facility, you feel the wind hit your face as you push the door open. Clicking on Matt’s name, you greet him the second he answers on the third ring.
“Hey, everything went alright with you and the young grasshopper?”
“Depends on your standards of ‘alright’. I have a broken nose, Stark is probably gonna have trouble eating for a while, and the CEO of Stark Industries probably holds a grudge against me.”
“That’s actually a lot better than I expected.” You hear him hum in thought, making you grin and blurt out, “You taught him that kick to break people’s noses, didn’t you?”
The other side of the receiver went silent before Matt said mischievously, “How would you rate the kick from a teacher standpoint? I need to know if his training is paying off.” You growled but reverted your face into a smile as Peter walked out and made grabby motions to the phone after you mouthed Daredevil.
“Hey DD!” He chirped into the receiver before saying how Stark asked him to join the Avengers and passed on it, deeming it a test. Matt congratulates him and promises a small gathering before you two go on patrol as an apology for it all. Peter quiets before agreeing softly and hanging up, moving close to you to snuggle into your arms. “He said he’s taking a break from being DD? How long is that going to be?” You feel yourself tense before replying, “I don’t know, kid. He seems to be going through a lot of stuff right now and can’t take it all. But, I guess he should be thankful he has a friendly neighborhood Spiderman to watch his territory, huh? Speaking of, thanks for watching Greenwich.”
“It’s fine. I’m just glad you’re back, maybe he’ll put on the suit again now that you’re back.”
“Yeah. Now, changing the subject, how the fuck are you in contact with Jean-Phillipe?”
“Who’s Jean-Phillipe?”
“Fantomex. I just use Charlie because his last name is Charles. You know what, that’s another story and you’re avoiding my question, kid.”
Peter grins mischievously at the exact same moment Happy walks right out, ready to take you both back home.
You really can’t catch a break.
Getting a casual call from May a few hours later, you head over to their house with food to do your new routine of watching stupid shows and eating takeout. Seeing the door open with Peter flailing his arms around in his Spiderman suit and May’s fist coming directly for your face? That was unexpected. Peter drags you in and immediately hands you some frozen tater tots bag as May begins to pace.
“You knew he was doing this? How could you help put him in danger? He’s only 15!” She cried out, fury on her face as Peter stood on the sidelines, silently looking at the ground as you quietly listened while holding the bag to your slowly bruising eye.
You internally beg that somehow your boyfriend will not somehow sense the throbs of blood in your eye or some weird shit about your bloody nostrils. Getting two injuries in less than a day and you weren’t even out doing your vigilante gig. As she continued, fuming to the two of you about how illegal and irresponsible it was, you thought through it all. You really had been careless, claiming Peter as a mutant in your head. Not everyone grew up in the school, these humans had families who deserved to know what their child was doing.
“I’m sorry. To both of you. I should’ve known to contact his guardian immediately instead of letting him go around doing this. Peter, you shouldn’t have been there with all that violence and crime happening. Superpowers or not, you deserve better.” Peter opened his mouth to protest, but you raised your hand to stop him.
“But, I know with or without me, he would’ve been the same way. Do you know what his first aid was before I started mentoring him?”
She shook her head.
“Bandaids and alcohol wipes. I’m not going to excuse myself for what I did, but I don’t regret teaching him the necessities because I know he wouldn’t have lasted very long in this gig, physically wise. Which is the same reason why I didn’t tell you either. If I had told you, he wouldn’t have trusted me anymore. With injuries, mental health problems, etc. We see shit in this job and it affects us. I didn’t want him to go through that alone because he was trying to keep it a secret in an attempt to protect you.”
Peter turns to her and softly says, “Can you at least let me explain why I do this? Please, May?” She looks reluctant, but nods and you all sit on the couches to talk for an hour or so. Eventually, after going through every plan of emergency, injuries, and evacuations, she agrees to let him patrol weekly. “Sorry about your eye.” May hesitantly states, a nervous flush on her face as you chuckle and wave it off.
“It’s alright. Hell, if I was in your shoes I would’ve gone absolutely feral.”
It wasn’t until you and Peter were taking a break on a rooftop after splitting up to cover different crimes did he ask you to go in depth.
“So is your mutation the Feral gene? Or is that your secondary?”
You give a so-so motion with your hand as Peter tilts his head in confusion. “What does that mean? Half feral?” You sigh as the teen wiggles in excitement, urging you to continue.
“So, the Feral gene is a sort of animalistic mutation that can occur and it’s actually more common than you think. Thus, it’s sometimes hidden away waiting to be activated, and it can range from a change in appearance or simple things like a healing factor.”
“Like you?”
You remark bitterly, “I did fall a few stories off a building with only a few weeks or so worth of rest, so yeah. Anyways, that was only triggered by my event. Financial stability is my primary mutation though. My genes aren't as strong as others, obviously. It’s just enough that it takes a bit less time to heal. That’s it.”
Peter pointed out, “Your genes were strong enough to start snarling at Mr. Stark and snapping your teeth to try and bite him.” You glare mockingly before chuckling, and replying, “Maybe. Anyways, I’m heading back to Greenwich. Think you’ll be okay, Spidey?” He nods, swinging off as you jump around rooftops to head back to your apartment.
“So what the fuck happened while I was gone?” You ask, staring at the ceiling with your head on Matt’s lap as he reads his paperwork. He paused, fingers moving from the braille papers to your hair. As he begins to discuss it all, you watch him in amazement at how quickly this man managed to push all his connections away. You blink after he finishes.
“How–”
“I don’t know.”
MONTHS LATER
Every now and then you wonder, would your life be the same as it is if you weren’t a mutant? Would it be the same if you didn’t join the X-Men at a young age?
Trying not to fall while clutching three cloth-wrapped dogs to your chest as you parkour out of a burning building, you can absolutely say no. No, it would definitely not be the same at all. You struggle to hold onto the rebreather in your mouth, teeth clenching tightly as you feel your arms flex to adjust the weight of the animals.
The day started vaguely normal. After not doing stretches before patrol, you pulled a muscle and cursed the entire way back home with Peter on your tail, cackling while calling you old. “Can we un-adopt him? I feel like we did all that we could now. It seems safe to ditch him.” You grumble after telling him the story, hearing Matt laughing in reply, kissing you goodbye as he left for court. Spending the day resting (by resting you mean you healed an hour later and didn’t have any other plans), you did insignificant things before making your way to Matt’s apartment to wait for him. You attempted to make a bowl of cereal after he reluctantly bought your sugar filled rainbow cereal, but you gag instantly. “Doesn’t he have enhanced senses? What the fuck?” You whine, tossing the expired milk out and going to the bathroom to get the taste out of your mouth.
The door opens as you walk out his bedroom to see him taking his coat off. You sit on the counter as he sighs before pulling you into his arms. Brushing his hair back and caressing his cheek with your thumb, he speaks.
“I’m doing the right thing…right? It’s just, Daredevil is better off gone. It ruined my friendships. He deserves to be gone.” You take off his glasses and kiss his forehead before replying in a neutral tone, “It’s your choice on what you want. I’ll be here regardless, making sure you don’t exhaust yourself like a dumbass.” He breathes deeply and nods, stilling at the sound of something. Before you could question it, he sends you to the ground, covering your body with his own as rumbles fill the apartment. You instinctively cover Matt’s ears as even the noises outside give you an overwhelming feeling.
Internally, you thank the fact that your senses aren’t as strong as his. It’s overwhelming, but enough to be a niggling pain in your ears. The second the quakes stop, he helps you up and runs his hands over you to check for any injuries as you look him over in return. Once you both deem each other okay, you rush to his bedroom and grab your duffel bag with your things. Zipping up your suit, you look through your utility belt to make sure you’re carrying extra first aid before saying fuck it and deciding to bring the entire bag with you. Walking back to the living room, you notice his head tilted as he grows more distressed.
“Matt.” You call out, repeating his name while walking closer as he finally tunes it out to focus on you. He pauses at hearing the familiar swoosh of your cape before nodding. You know not everyone in the neighborhood or the surrounding areas are as lucky. He can practically smell the smoke of new fires from here. “Go. I’ll be fine. Promise.” Turning away, you stop before groaning and going through your bag. You toss a rebreather and spare domino mask at him as you reply, “I know you will. Thing in your hand is for any place that has a lack of oxygen in case you…coincidentally stumble into a fire. Love you.” After hearing the call back, you slip out the window and swing off.
Foggy was going to kill you for mildly encouraging his vigilantism.
You gently drop the dogs onto the sidewalk, seeing the owners rush towards their pets as you disappear into the shadows. Pulling up your mask to take out the rebreather to put into your utility belt, you work on climbing onto a nearby roof. You get a sense of deja vu when you notice a shadow nearby.
Taking a break, my ass.
Pretending not to see him (while cooing internally at him actually wearing your domino mask), you continue your way around the neighborhoods as you text Peter updates urging him to stay home.
After hours of stopping robberies, rescuing people from fires, scooping up soot-covered animals, and getting a snack at a bodega (you petted the bodega cat, don’t worry), you manage to make your way back to your boyfriend’s apartment.
Coming in just in time to see him throw his first aid kit and punch the table makes you pause. His head snaps towards you, sniffing the air as the smell of ash clings in the crevices of your suit. You unzip the top half of the costume before walking towards him to make a comment. “ Foggy. Foggy. Foggy.” The voice in Matt’s phone interrupts as he answers it, making you decide to shower in the meantime.
Feeling the water run down your body, you rub at your shoulder ache before jumping when Matt opens the door. “Foggy wants to meet at Josie’s. I’ll be back soon, okay? Take a nap, I know you spent all night out.” He leaves, choosing to ignore you chirping, “ Hypocrite !”
You finish showering, clean the suit to try and get rid of the stench of fires, pick up the aid kit Matt threw, and toss the bag on the kitchen table. Grabbing tools, you begin to fiddle with a new gadget that Peter has been asking you to make. A tracker.
You admit that you cried like a baby when he said he didn’t want the same thing to happen to him again. So, you made one for in the suit and without. Simple jewelry with a hidden button, and clicking it alerts one another of their location. First test one you made, you gave to Matt.
“Please? I just wanna test it out to make sure it doesn’t randomly combust or something.” You ask with a pout, grinning when he chuckles and grabs the bracelet from you. “Would it work if I still take it off sometimes? If I just keep it in my pocket?” At your nod knowing that his senses get weird when he wears jewelry, he kisses your cheek and takes off.
Throughout the week, he clicks the button to test it out. Whenever he hears your boots hit the nearest rooftop, he texts a codeword and senses you swing away. After that, it was only routine that he managed to always snag the bracelet before going out.
For his suit, Peter’s AI was nice enough to install a program separate from herself? Itself? Anyways, with the newest upgrade of a small computer on your wrist, it also sends you his location. Granted it’s not Stark tech, but you’re very proud of how you managed to add it onto your wrist.
Hours of tears, sweat, and blood for all this. You should email your friend from Europe, he’d be so proud. Then get immediately angry at the fact that you didn’t just ask him to make upgrades.
Getting a text from Matt about meeting with a new client, you finally decide on going to sleep. Stretching and hearing your back pop, you slink into the sheets and sigh. You have a feeling Matt wasn’t going to be home anytime soon.
Turns out you were right.
You wake up hours later, staring at the new cracks in the wall as you spare a glance at your phone to see if there’s anything else. Nothing except a link to some video from Peter.
You really need friends your own age. Preferably, ones that didn’t come from Xavier’s school or have random abilities.
Before you can even try to call Matt, a beep emits from your discarded costume on the table. Pulling back the covers and rushing over, you grab the wrist computer to see the location Matt triggered the tracker from. Is…this man is at a restaurant? Ignoring the questions running through your mind, you suit up and take off. Deciding to hide on a nearby roof to scope it out first, it doesn’t take long to find it. Namely because there’s a van crashing through the neon-covered place.
How good is that fucking food?
Another man climbs up the ladder of the roof, jumping into the top window to land inside.
You once again, emphasize. How good is that fucking food?
Standing up and ready to make your entrance, you freeze at the sight of masked men shooting furiously into the building. Honestly, how does he get into these situations? You make it towards the window where the man crashed into and drop some capsules, where it immediately covers the room in thick smoke.
You drop down and realize Matt is protecting people, so you immediately take note of their faces before beginning the fight. You grab one man, not hesitating to break his elbow as you throw yourself at 2 more. Now that the smoke is clearing, you note that Matt is gone and everyone seemed to go their separate ways to fight individually.
Sliding towards the outside of the restaurant, you see a man being taken into a van as it drives away. Shooting the grappling hook, you swing and follow. It takes a moment because of reckless driving but you grin at the opening. Getting a chance, you land on the roof as it swerves over the sudden weight before seeing the passenger window slide down. A man peeks his head out and you strike, gripping his shirt and throwing them out.
“Hey– stop screaming –kidnapping is bad driving etiquette.” You point out, kicking him hard enough that the door opens and he tumbles out. Tossing a weight to get it to hit the breaks, you throw yourself in the back. “I really gotta get better jokes. Wait. Aren’t you that hero guy from Harlem?” The familiar man gathers his breath to introduce himself, chuckling at you tying the unconscious man up before slipping back into the driver’s seat with a cheerful, “Well, Luke Cage, where we headed?”
After a few minutes of chatting, you stop outside a building and hop out. “Do you mind waiting here?” At you agreeing, he walks in as you whistle a tune to distract yourself from the fact that you’re 30 percent sure that the man you tossed out of the car going seventy-five miles per hour will live.
People walk out of the building, namely Matt who hides his smile at sensing you before you begin, “Hi, sweetie, I'm not dead’. ‘Baby, I’m definitely not doing vigilante shit after making Daredevil disappear.’ ‘Oh, light of my life, I’m just on my way back home and can’t wait to see you.’ Any of those responses would have been fine. Even if you had decided to put on the suit again and patrol. But, no. You trigger your tracker and I witness whatever the fuck that was back there.”
Matt steps forward and grabs your gloved hand, pulling you away as Luke opens the van backdoors. “Lye, I’m sorry. This all just happened and it came out of nowhere.” You sigh and squeeze his hand before answering, “It’s fine, I’m just glad you used your tracker. I think I’m more annoyed by how worried I got.” He nods and is interrupted by one of the women coming up to you. “Did you two get your costumes from the Halloween store? How do you two have so much?”
You chuckle at the insult( ? ), ignoring your skin heating up in embarrassment as you introduce yourself when feeling eyes on you. Namely your white lenses.
“They’re going to want you to reveal yourself. Trust.” Matt murmurs as you pull back your hood and display the domino mask. “I keep taking it off all the time, eventually I’m gonna have to admit to Erik that he’s right.” You grumble before saying your real name and clapping your hands when Luke asks you to drive the van to another location.
“Can I keep the van? I’m feeling attached to her now. The blood on the floor gives it an aesthetic feel.”
Watching the unconscious man get tied up and put into the room, you notice the older man nearby. Glancing at Matt’s tense form, it all makes sense. And as if hearing it, Matt turns to you and grabs your waist tightly.
The others take notice of Matt muttering, “He’s not worth it, Lineup. Stand down.”
“A child. They were children. You deserve to be fucking killed.” You hissed, glaring at the man who didn’t seem to care despite hearing the anger flooding your body, heart pumping harshly as heat rushed into your face.
“I did what needed to be done.”
“No, you exploited children into some war. Child soldiers.”
Are you a bit biased due to your history? Probably. Are you overprotective of everyone after what happened to Peter? Absolutely.
“Wait, can someone explain what’s going on? What do you mean child soldiers?” Danny asked, eyebrows furrowed as Matt replied, “Nothing. It doesn’t matter right now.”
You sigh softly and push yourself out of Matt’s arms before walking further from the groups.
“How long do you think he’ll be out?”
“Not much longer.” Jessica replied, and you turn to see Danny looking confused. “How do you know?”
“Because this is happening.”
You wince at the punch, hearing it echo before you walk outside to scope out the location. It’s not much. The breeze hits your face and makes you put your mask back on.
It’s a funny feeling in your heart. You felt a sense of peace these past few weeks just for it to be ripped away by what? Ninjas?
You hate New York City sometimes.
Tuning into everyone making their way out, you ask what happened. “They’re threatening our loved ones, so we’re moving them for a couple of days.” Matt replied, gesturing to your car as everyone went their own ways. You sigh softly and turn to him.
“So you have Karen and Foggy. Do you think they know about Peter?”
Matt shook his head, but still looked hesitant. “I can watch Peter, if you want. Just as a precaution.”
The two of you shared a glance before nodding, driving towards Karen’s workplace. Taking time to call Blink and getting her agreement, you smile at Karen who nervously smiled back. “Sorry about all this.”
Never in your life have you felt awkwardness like this. Not even from you two, but the shame radiating from Matt. You and Karen chatted politely, even getting a few genuine giggles from her as you told some stupid joke.
His head tilted for a moment. You looked at Karen in the rearview mirror before stopping at the sidewalk. “Thank you. Just get Karen and I’ll get Foggy.” Matt muttered, kissing your cheek and exiting the car as you immediately turned to Karen and waved her to the passenger seat. She brightens and moves to the front, asking quickly, “So what’s really going on? He didn’t give me many answers.”
You snort. “Out of all the people, he probably has them all and I have none. I literally just burst at the last minute to help, Karen. I barely know what’s going on.” The two of you sigh before she utters, “He really is a dickhead.” You bark out a laugh and agree, looking at her grin.
It doesn’t take long to drive her to the precinct, waving her off as you drive back towards the abandoned building just in time to come in to see Daredevil wrap wire around the man’s neck.
His face turns towards you, knowing the telltale signs of you getting excited before continuing to threaten the tied man. Fuck why is it hot. Why is he so hot when he’s doing things that you pretty sure are illegal?
You walk over to Jessica as you tune into the conversation.
“We have our weapon.”
“Let’s talk about your weapon. What did you do to her? What did you do to Elektra?” You freeze for a moment at his trembling voice as confusion grows. He never said anything about her. As he grows angrier, you move closer and grab his elbow. “D, enough.”
He ignores you, listening as the other man says, “Elektra died on a rooftop in your arms–” You quickly knock him out, pushing Daredevil away. You turn to look at Matt who doesn’t react, but you can see his eyebrow twitch faintly. That tells you all you need to know.
“When were you going to tell me? Huh?” You asked softly and felt hurt grow as he sighed, trying to grab your hand. You take a step back and hiss out, “Location. Any crime nearby.” Before Matt could say anything, Stick rattled off a street address as Matt nodded.
“Attempted bank robbery.”
You pull out your escrima sticks and walk out the door.
You regret not going back.
