Mitchell with Two L's

Chapter 34: Halloween & Shirts

Summary:

Deb & Eric have some Halloween fun, and Linda gifts the boys with a very special shirt.

Notes:

So... I'm very, very sorry that I did not post in October, and that I'm late with November. I went on vacation for most of October, so my writing time was basically nonexistent, and in November I've started working at a new location and my head has been filled with new procedures and knowledge, and also BC (Canada) has been going through some tough times lately (on the bright side there are no more forest fires because a lot of those areas were under water/flooding for a bit there) and I haven't been in much of a mood to write happy things (and this is a happy space).
They're excuses, but they're why I haven't written much of anything lately, and also why these are both so short XD

I also wrote Hailey and Jim into part of this chapter before realizing I hadn't done so from Eric or Deb's perspectives yet, so they didn't have names, and I also realized that I had written Abbey Posey in from their perspective and forgot to come up with a name for her, so Hailey and Jim have names based on what little we see of them, and Abbey is Abbey (which I find disproportionately hilarious).

Linda= Mother
Rick= Red-Faced-Anger-Man
Aaron= Small-Dinosaur-Boy
Hailey Posey= Insta-Mom
Jim Posey= Barbequing-Man
Abbey Posey= Abbey

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

HALLOWEEN

For their first Halloween Eric and Deb had decided they would try something simple first. They were ghosts, at the suggestion of Small-Dinosaur-Boy, because (in his words) ‘you’re already white and capable of flying, why not be ghosts?’

So the duo accompanied Small-Dinosaur-Boy (dressed in a full-body triceratops costume), and Abbey (dressed in a full-body spinosaurus costume) around the neighbourhood to each house and slowly filled their bags with candy.

Mother and Red-Faced-Anger-Man would wait on the sidewalk for them with Insta-Mom and Barbequing-Man; Mother and Insta-Mom trying to subtly brag about their children and Red-Faced-Anger-Man and Barbequing-Man talking about hiking, cooking, and how obsessed their children were with dinosaurs.

The night was declared a success by Small-Dinosaur-Boy and Abbey once they had all filled their bags to the brim and struggled to hold them without spilling candy on the ground.

Deb and Eric were disappointed when they remembered they weren’t able to consume human foods and sweets, and after voicing their disappointment immediately had to remind Mother that they did not eat batteries but they appreciated her efforts to include them.

THE SHIRTS

“Mother, what is this?”

Linda looked over from her garden, curious as to what was so confusing it had brought one of her boys outside. Eric was holding up a bright purple shirt that had ‘MITCHELLS’ written across the back in a mishmash of different fonts, all of the letters a different colour and each one clashing horrible with the letters beside it.

“Sweetie,” Linda smiled softly, “that’s a family shirt. If we ever go to a big family reunion then we all wear those shirts! Our part of the family is the purple family, and each of the branches of the family gets a different colour.”

Eric gently ran a hand over the colourful letters, and Linda could tell they were considering what she said.

“Family reunion?”

She laughed quietly and turned back to her garden, keeping a side-eye on Eric. “It’s not as impressive as it probably sounded just then. Not a lot of people regularly show up because we’re all so spread out, honestly the last really big reunion was before Katie was even born! But I like to make sure we all have a shirt ready, just in case we feel like going.”

Eric carefully tugged the shirt on and held their arms out, Linda leaning back on her heels to clap as they slowly turned around. As they spun around fully Linda could tell that they were delighted with the shirt, another link to the family that they and Deb never could have thought they’d have.

“My beautiful boy, you look like a proper Mitchell.”

Notes:

Hope you enjoyed! I'm a little rusty with the gang here XD

Let me know what you think!

And in case you were wondering, Aaron and Abbey's costumes are real! Here is the Spinosaurus and the Triceratops respectively.

And the family reunion colour coordination is what one side of my family does. The big four (grandpa and the 3 great aunts) all get a colour, and the offshoots of their branches of the family wear varying shades in their colours. This is just for the first day though, after that you can wear whatever. I've only been to 2 reunions. The first was a few years ago, and my mom hadn't been to one for over 2 decades at that point (so since before I was born XD); and the second was in 2020 and it was a very big Zoom meeting that was actually kinda fun even though I'd forgotten what everyone looked like by that point. Do any of you lovely readers have family get togethers like this?

Eat, drink, take your meds, take yourself for a walk (or whatever non-sitting/laying activity you prefer) and get some sun. Self-care is in for me right now, and I hope you treat yourself kindly (at least for as long as it takes you to read this).

Notes:

Have a wonderful day! Or, if not a wonderful one, then a not-bad one where you eat and drink water and go outside (or stand by an open window) at least once!
