Summary:

Could it be possible that Link remembered something before the war, or was it simply by luck?

Chapter Text

“We have accomplished so much, but there’s still more that needs to be done.”

“Yeah, but don’t you think we need a break?”

Zelda raised an eyebrow at Link. “A break? It’s appropriate if you’re unwell, and surely that’s not the case with you?”

“Well, no. It’s just…”

Link gestured to the vast field of green. Flowers and trees had finally grown properly to cover the scars of an olden war. Where broken swords and arrow heads once sat, shrubbery and shy plants covered the scars of the land. Critters ran to and fro around the field, birds sang a tune of merry times, and more spots of color peaked through the greenery as the days went by. Dipping down to pluck a few flowers, Link smiled at Zelda.

“I think taking some time to enjoy what we managed to do wouldn’t hurt.”

Careful fingers collected the petals until a small mountain of blue and white grew in his hand. Seeing a silent princess was once a rarity amongst the survivors of the olden battle, but now to see them when the sun grew bold? Brave enough to run a hand through the clouds and shine onto the world of color?

Perhaps miracles, as fragile as they may be, weren’t for fools after all. Arranging the petals until they held onto each other in his hand, Zelda widened her eyes when Link blew the petals and they spun together into a spiral pattern, fluttering away from them. Strong enough to seem like they’ll travel to the heavens, though softly still to remain in that circling pattern. The same trick she taught him all of those years ago, and to perform it as effortlessly as before? Link noticed her incredulous stare, and he tilted his head at her.

“What? Did you think I forgot?” he asked.

Out of all the memories that left and came back to him, did he truly remember it? Or perhaps this one was by luck—a curious word for the hero—though his smile seemed convincing, and she couldn’t help but smile back.

“You’ve forgotten much, so I assumed you’ve forgotten about this too but… well.”

Reaching for a few flowers of her own and collecting the petals in the same fashion, Zelda cupped the cluster of blue and white in her hands, its shape remaining intact when she brought it close to her face. A deep breath in, and a breath out to blow the petals away.

Ever so delicately, they flew into a spiraling pattern. The breeze held them, gently enough to keep them afloat but with the same strength to carry out their pattern. Blue and white, trailing after the petals from the hero, and spinning oh spinning in such a mesmerizing manner.

Zelda crossed her arms, her eyes distant in ancient memories but present enough to follow the petals’ pattern. “I’m glad that you didn’t forget it.”

Link shot a little smile shot at her. He hummed, twirling a shy princess between his fingers as he watched the petals far from them start to fall.

“Yeah… me too.”

Notes:

Requested tumblr prompt: "Did you think I forgot?"
Short and sweet! I have yet to finish BotW but it seemed fitting for the prompt, and I wanted to experiment with a little headcanon of mine. c:
