Chapter Text

Riddle shot up, panting. What just happened? He tried to look around, but it was already dark, he could barely see anything, just the subtle light of the moon peaking through his curtains. He shuffled around to find his magic pen, hoping that he would be able to create some sort of light but instead, he found out that his left hand was stuck under a strong grip, unable to move. Slight shuffling was heard beside him before a voice finally came to light.

“Goldfishie?”

Riddle furrowed his eyebrows upon recognizing the owner of the voice. Yes, Floyd had been helping him fall asleep, but he has never been there when Riddle woke up. Suddenly, Riddle winced at the jarring migraine that had strained upon him. Floyd, seeing this, immediately shot up to hold the shorter boy.

“What..what happened? What are you doing here?”

Floyd was gently holding Riddle’s face, other hand still tightly gripping onto his. Riddle couldn’t see clearly, but he could tell Floyd was clearly worried from the way his hands were slightly shaking. Riddle only responded by leaning into the touch.

“Are you okay? Feel sick? Hurt?”

“I’m fine, but could you tell me what happened?”

“That's what I should be asking you, Goldfishie. I was walking the hallways like normal ‘til you suddenly bumped into me. And instead of being all like ‘Off With Your Head’ like you usually are, you started panicking! Next thing I knew I carried you here.” Floyd sighed, thumb drawing circles around Riddle’s cheek. Riddle could hear the panic in Floyd’s voice, it was quiet in a way Riddle had never heard, but the worry laced throughout his words were so loud. It stuck out amongst the quiet streaks of the usual teasing that adorned Floyd’s voice.

“I…” And then it hit Riddle, he remembered why he had such a violent reaction.

“Leona-senpai overblotted…” Floyd said nothing, instead, all Riddle heard was a sharp inhale, as if he had finally realized why Riddle had such a big panic attack in the middle of the day.

“I was confronting him for cheating and–” Riddle was cut off by his own wincing, a random migraine that had suddenly sprained on him, causing him to jerk forward and hold his head. Floyd, seeing Riddle’s sudden reaction, also jumped in surprise, bringing himself closer to his Goldfishie, reaching his hand out to hold Riddle’s.

“Goldfishie! Are you alright?” His grip on Riddle’s finger started tightening, until Riddle brought his own hand to rest it upon Floyd’s, giving it a gentle squeeze.

“I’m fine, sorry, that came out of nowhere. As I was saying. I was helping the others fend off Leona-senpai from causing any actual harm, especially to the freshmen. I was handling it perfectly fine, even after we subjugated him, nothing was out of the ordinary. And then we brought him to the hospital ward. They also insisted that I had to get checked out too, fearing that I might’ve used too much magical energy during the fight.” Floyd could feel Riddle’s hands start to shake, and his breath start to waver. He scooted closer to the housewarden, using the hand that was still caressing Riddle’s face to tilt it upwards, locking eyes with his own.

“It’s okay, Goldfishie. I’m here.” Riddle nodded in return, swallowing his own saliva to continue speaking.

“I thought I was fine, but the tests they were conducting were extremely similar to the ones they did back when I overblotted, in fact, I suspect they were the same ones.” Floyd nodded, gloved finger still holding Riddle’s face. “And…I just–” Another gulp. “I got scared. I got reminded of my own overblot. And then I started seeing things. The things I saw from when I overblotted. I saw Ace’s scared face. I saw Trey’s pity. I saw my own memories and they–” At this point Riddle began tearing up. “They scared me so much, Floyd.” He said in a quiet whisper, yet it was this quiet tone that did the most damage to Floyd’s heart.

The merman had never felt such excruciating pain. He’s been stepped on, he’s been beaten up, he’s even had the privilege to get thrown into fire (courtesy of the crying boy in front of him) but even that didn’t compare to the pain that Floyd currently felt in his chest. Goldfishie, someone that could rival the powerful trident of the sea, felt scared. Floyd let go of Riddle’s hand, propping himself on the side of Riddle’s bed, before pulling the housewarden straight into his chest, holding him tightly.

“Goldfishie…” He could still feel the slight tremble on Riddle’s fingers that were holding his arms. Floyd sighed. He pushed Riddle away, shocking the boy, before he fully got up and sat in Riddle’s bed, legs crossed. He then pulled Riddle onto his lap, one hand holding his back while the other came caress Riddle’s cheek once more.

“It’s okay to feel scared, Goldfishie.” Riddle looked up at Floyd, confused. This certainly wasn’t what Riddle was expecting Floyd to say. “See, most landfolks think that to be strong is to be unafraid. But that’s totally wrong. To be strong, is to not be afraid of being scared. Ya wanna know something? Moray Eels are complete pussy cats. They are scared at heart. They won’t do anything unless they're guaranteed success. Ya wanna know something else?” Riddle nodded. “I’m super strong. Although I’m sure you already know that Goldfishie, I could squeeze anyone I wanted! Haha!” Floyd laughed, attempting to lighten up the mood and sure enough, it worked. Riddle had stopped shaking. “I’m strong because I know I’m scared, but I don’t let that stop me.” Floyd leaned in to rest his head on top of Riddle’s.

“Goldfishie, you’re really strong, you know that? That was one of the first things I noticed about you. Well, besides your red hair. Heh.” Floyd could hear Riddle grumble, but he only let out a grin. “But sometimes, I think you focus too much on being strong. So much so, that you start to forget what makes you become strong in the first place. It’s your fears. Goldfishie, being scared doesn’t mean you’ve turned weak or useless. Being scared doesn’t mean the Heartslabyul fishies are gonna respect you any less. Being scared you’re still able to grow. Maybe not in size but, certainly in power. When you feel scared, Goldfishie, instead of thinking ‘it’s because I didn’t try hard enough’ or ‘if only I was better, I wouldn’t feel this way’ rather, you should think about how much stronger you can get because you are scared.” Riddle pushed his head away from Floyd’s chest, making eye contact with the latter. “And you know what? On days that you’re scared, and you feel alone, I’ll be here. I can protect you from all those other sharks out there. I don’t mind getting bitten a few times, I’ll just squeeze them right back. I know my Goldfishie can stand up even after the heaviest pushes, and I’ll always be there to wait for you regardless of how long you take.”

Riddle’s eyes started tearing up, he felt so naked under Floyd’s gaze. How had Floyd managed to comfort every fiber of fear in Riddle’s body in just a short amount of time, without Riddle even having spoken of it? He never mentioned the disappointed faces that haunt his nightmare, he never mentioned his fear of inadequacy being the reason why he pushed himself so hard, and he certainly never brought up feeling so alone and unprotected in the world. Yet he didn’t need to, why? Simply because Floyd saw his fears. He saw Riddle’s fears and instead being disgusted, he promised his loyalty to the housewarden, one that wasn’t even his own. Riddle’s eyes started tearing up again, but instead of crying out loud he just hugged Floyd, letting his tears soak the boy’s shirt, letting out quiet sobs. Floyd said nothing, instead, he only brought his hand out to pat Riddle’s back, comforting him.

The two sat in silence, only the occasional hiccups from Riddle was heard. After about an hour had passed, Riddle had finally calmed down. It was still considerably silent until Riddle felt Floyd’s jaw move on top of his head, and then subsequently heard a yawning sound. He widened his eyes, pushing away from Floyd before asking, “What time is it?!?”

“Ah?” Floyd, still a bit teary from his yawn, replied. “Probably around two? I dunno.”

“Two?!?” Riddle pushed away from Floyd, “We must go to bed immediately!” He quickly got off from Floyd’s lap so that the taller boy could stand up. Floyd stood, immediately stretching his long limbs. “Well, see ya, Goldfishie.” As Floyd was prepared to leave, he was stopped by a hand reaching out to hold him. He turned his head, tilting it, silently asking Riddle for the reason.

“...It’s late. Just stay the night.” Floyd paused in shock, before letting out a wide grin.

“Heh. Sure thing. Got a bathroom anywhere?”

“...Down the left.”

“Gotcha.” Floyd smirked before disappearing. Riddle on the other hand, could barely hear Floyd over the pounding of his own heart. Now that he had finished crying, he finally realized the position him and Floyd were in just barely minutes ago. They were practically cuddling! Riddle was in his lap! His face burned in embarrassment. Just what happened to the so-called strictness he was supposed to embody as Heartslabyul’s housewarden? But to be fair, Floyd had been doing exceptionally well in following their rules, he wasn’t even a student!

Just then, Floyd walked back into Riddle’s room, abandoning his sleepwear, instead just wearing a plain black shirt with sweatpants. “You’re done already?” Riddle swiftly turned his head to the merman whose hair was still wet.

“Meh. I’m fast underwater ya know.” He smirked. “Anyways, you didn’t happen to have turkey today, did you, Goldfishie?”

“No? Why do you ask?”

“Nice.” Floyd walked over to Riddle’s bed, flopping himself on it. “Just wanted to know since I only brought over enough toothpaste for one brush.”

Oh.

Rule 648: You must brush your teeth 2 times on nights when you eat turkey.

So that’s why Floyd wanted to know.

Riddle softly smiled, before walking over to the merman who was holding a disposable toothbrush. He gently took the brush from Floyd, “You didn’t have to, Floyd. But thank you.” Riddle could feel his cheeks heat up.

“I wanted to.” Floyd smiled back. Once Riddle had finally finished, he walked over to his bed, which at this point, Floyd had already tucked himself in. The issue however, was that Floyd slept directly in the middle. While Riddle’s bed wasn’t ginormous, he was sure it would be able to fit two people if they shared the space evenly. Floyd, on the other hand furrowed his eyebrows in annoyance, before reaching a hand out to pull Riddle onto the bed and towards the merman.

“Cmon, what’re you waiting for? M tired.” He slurred, Riddle blushed, but didn’t protest. He let himself be manhandled by Floyd, until the latter was finally happy with their position. In the end, Riddle was pulled into Floyd’s chest, laying on one of his arms, while the other arm stretched out over Riddle’s stomach.

“G’night Goldfishie.” Floyd said softly, before Riddle heart quiet snores coming from the taller boy. Smiling, he snuggled further into Floyd’s chest, before whispering back.

“Goodnight, Floyd.”

That morning he woke up to a hard body pressed against his back, and a protective arm wrapped around his waist, yet all this weight couldn't compare to the fluttering of his heart.

Riddle shut his dormitory door with a loud bang, before immediately sinking down, bringing his hands to hold his extremely red face. This cannot be happening, he thought. His heart was pounding furiously, and he could feel heat pooling in both his ears and cheeks. He was absolutely NOT catching feelings for Floyd Leech! It was all because of Ace and his ridiculous need to externalize his empty thoughts!

“Ya know housewarden, you seem pretty chummy with Floyd-senpai these days.” Said the freshmen, as he was casually dropping sugarcubes into his tea.

“Now that I think about it, you’re kinda right, Ace. Housewarden-Riddle doesn’t even threaten him when he randomly intrudes into our dorm these days.” Riddle whipped his head over to glare at his two troublemaking juniors.

“Eep!” They both let out in terror.

“What in the Twisted Wonderland are you guys talking about?” He asked, throat tightening up.

“I mean, just think about it! Before, everytime Floyd-senpai comes, you’re always like ‘Floyd, what are you doing here!’ yelling at him and all that about school conduct, but now, even when he comes over and practically flops himself over your entire chair, you don’t say a word! You even talk to him like you guys are friends!” Ace defended himself, completely abandoning the tea.

“Maybe that's because we’re classmates. And I don’t see the issue of Floyd and I being friends, we are in the same year after all.”

“Yeah but…argh.” Grumbling, Ace gave up. Riddle only continued to sip his tea, silently celebrating his victory. “One would think you guys are dating or something.” Riddle immediately stood up upon hearing this.

“Dating?!?” He repeated. “Dating would mean we both have romantic feelings for each other!”

“Well, uh, yeah.”

“Dating would mean one of us confessed!”

“Yes, housewarden. Congratulations for understanding one of the basic functions in human life?” Ace, now incredibly confused (and a bit scared honestly) voiced out.

“We. Are. Not. Dating.” Riddle made sure to enunciate every single word clearly, before stomping out of the room, leaving a confused Ace and Deuce.

That was how he found himself in his current state, blushing, crouched right in front of his door. If anyone saw this they would just think about how pathetic Riddle looks right now. He took a deep breath in, collecting himself and standing up to find a glass of cold iced tea, something that could possibly help alleviate his burning face before making his way to class.

Riddle entered class as usual, calm and collected, indifferent to the behavior he was exhibiting previously. As he walked over to his seat, he noticed that his usual seat mate was missing but Riddle didn’t think much of it, Jade was bound to be here on time. So he simply took a seat, and brought out his potionology text books, waiting for Crewel to show up.

Just before the bell that indicated class has started rang, a certain teal headed merman entered the room, doors opening with a loud bang, surprising everyone in the room, Riddle included. However, contrary to his expectations of seeing the Octavinelle vice housewarden, it was instead his brother who entered the room. Riddle immediately tensed in shock, heart rate increasing at a phenomenal speed. Floyd, who looked initially annoyed perked up at the sight of the red headed housewarden, before making his way forwards Riddle.

“Goldfishie!” He grinned.

“Floyd, what are you doing here? This isn’t your class, and where is Jade? He seems to be missing.” Floyd furrowed his eyebrows, lips slightly pouting. Riddle could feel his ears heat up.

“Why’re you asking about Jade the moment I come in? He’s in some stupid meeting thing with Azul, says he already told Professor Beakfish and told me I gotta be his replacement or whatever.” Floyd tsked, bringing a hand to rub the back of his head.

“I see, well, take a seat. Class is about to start.”

“Ever the hard worker you are.” Floyd said before sitting down next to Riddle. Contrary to Riddle’s beliefs, Floyd appeared quite diligent, pulling out the proper text books to study. Satisfied, Riddle turned back to his own pile of notes, while waiting for Crewel’s arrival.

The lesson, to Riddle’s surprise, was quite smooth sailing despite the fact Floyd had come as a replacement to his brother. Riddle has heard multiple times of Floyd’s disruptive behavior in class, but here, Floyd was being, dare Riddle say, quite docile. He glanced over to the merman to see that he was just loosely listening to Crewel’s words, chin resting on his palm. Floyd looked a bit bored though. Riddle glanced down at his books, there were only a few words, as if Floyd had only bothered noting down the most crucial details. His line of sight then drifted off to Floyd’s hands that were resting on the table, free of any grip onto a writing mechanism. It was then that he noticed his own hand, resting upon the table right next to Floyd’s.

Dating…

Riddle was once more reminded of Ace’s words, was this really what it seemed like to others? Floyd and him? Dating? But before Riddle could continue this thought any further, he felt a light touch on his pinky finger. Riddle looked down to see that Floyd had intertwined their pinky fingers together. He looked back up to Floyd’s face, still indifferent to his presence, staring at the board in front of them, still leaning on his hand. Riddle’s cheeks started heating up, as he swiftly turned his head back to his own book, but made no attempt in untangling their fingers. Even if it would’ve been more convenient for him to write with both hands free.

They spent the rest of the class holding pinkies with each other. Not a single word was said between the two, but even if there were, Riddle doesn’t think he would’ve heard it over his own pounding heart. Once the bell finally rang, indicating that class was now over, Floyd casually let go of his pinky as if he never held it in the first place, packed up his books and stood up. Instead of leaving however, he slung his bag around his shoulder, pocketing his hands before looking down to Riddle, who was still sitting.

“Hey.” Riddle looked back up at the merman, heart still beating loudly.

“Yes?” But of course, he would never publicize his nervousness.

“You got a Croquet game today?”

“Why yes, in an hour actually.” Riddle replied. Floyd grinned.

“Great! I’ll be there, gotta put Crabby in his place after all that high talk he gave me in basketball. Plus, you promised me. Ya said I could play.” Riddle’s eyes widened, he wasn’t expecting Floyd to remember, but then again, no one could expect anything from Floyd.

Just like Rook’s belief, Riddle believes Floyd is the real ‘Monsieur Spontané’. Chucking, Riddle just nodded. “Then I’ll see you in an hour, Floyd.”

Riddle could see Floyd brighten up immediately, letting out a wide grin, showing all this sharp teeth and his eyes folded into crescent like moons. “See you there, Goldfishie!” Before he skipped away. Skipped. Floyd Leech was skipping! Riddle could feel the squeeze in his chest, and the burn in his cheeks, since when did Floyd become so closely connected with the term ‘adorable’ in Riddle’s dictionary?

Was it because he kept teasing Riddle? Was it because he had so much of the Queen of Heart’s rules memorized? Was it because he had been helping Riddle sleep at night? Or maybe it was the comforting after Leona’s overblot? Perhaps it could’ve been the paper rose that was kept inside of Riddle’s desk, protecting it from all harm. No, Riddle shook his head. It wasn’t because of one reason. It was because of all of them. Floyd Leech had so easily squirmed his way into Riddle’s closed heart. Was this because Moray eels had a way with tight spaces? Maybe. But, why was it Floyd Leech specifically that found the shallow and hidden pit inside Riddle’s chest so attractive? Why instead of forcing his way in he waited until Riddle opened his heart one by one? And since when did Riddle reserve a place in his heart for the merman? This was all happening because Floyd was simply so, gentle. He was gentle when serving Riddle tea, when holding his hand, when tucking the rose into Riddle’s hair. He was gentle when holding Grim in his lap, secretly petting the dire beast to comfort him. He was gentle in all the right ways, how could Riddle not let him in?

Riddle sighed, holding his head up by the forehead, preventing it from hitting the table. He absolutely did like the merman, hell he was probably in love with him. Yet instead of feeling disappointed, he felt strong. He felt strong because he was scared, scared of his own heart, scared of the disappointment, and most importantly scared of rejection. But he knew this wasn’t anything to fear, just like what Floyd had told him. Riddle smiled softly, seriously, only Floyd could make him feel like this, so vulnerable yet so powerful. He tidied his books up, and got up to leave the class, making his way forwards to Heartslabyul's dorm.

“Yahoo! Hole in one!”

“Floyd-senpai, that's not how it works!” Yelled a frustrated Ace.

“Uhuh, yeah right, you’re just jealous of my skills, Crabby. Look, even your housewarden says so.” Floyd smirked, looking over to Riddle.

“He is playing by the rules, Ace.” Riddle nodded, leaving the freshmen absolutely helpless.

“Ughhh.” Ace whined. “Deuce, can’t you see that he’s cheating!?”

“Nah, you’re just being a sore loser, Ace.” He smirked. Floyd his another hedgehog before yelling.

“Goaaaaal!” Floyd yelled, putting his hands up in victory.

“That’s not even the right game anymore!!” Ace tried protesting, but Floyd heard none of it, instead, he was busy laughing by himself. Just then, a hedgehog squeal was heard, before a bump echoed throughout the garden.

“Don’t get cocky too soon, Floyd. I just won.” Riddle smirked, holding the flamingo up. Floyd in reaction to Riddle’s clean hit, shrugged his shoulders, and a smile still on his face.

“It’s impossible to beat you, Goldfishie. You’re just too good.” Floyd smiled. “Well, I gotta get going, otherwise Azul’s gonna be pissssssed. Heh.” Floyd walked over to Riddle, before leaning in and whispering into his ear. “See you tonight, Goldfishie.” Before walking off, left hand raised to wave back at the crowd. Riddle brought his hand up to hold the ear Floyd whispered in, mortified by Floyd’s boldness. He cleared his throat, before turning back to face a speechless Ace, pointing at him.

“F–Floyd-senpai totally likes you!!” He claimed before Riddle successfully shut him up by his signature spell.

That night Riddle sat anxiously in his room, he couldn’t focus on his homework. He kept looking back and forth at the clock and his own notes. Sighing, he gave up. There was no way he’d be able to study like this. Besides, he finished all of today’s, and tomorrow’s important stuff. The day after could wait. He reached over and pulled out a drawer in his desk, revealing his phone, and beside it the origami rose Floyd gave him the other day. Riddle took his phone out, opening Magicam. It wasn’t often that he used the app, or his phone in general. He’d just mainly use Magicam to help Cater studying. He found that it was more effective if he’d post his notes directly onto Magicam, the junior somehow retained more information if he looked at it through the phone screen. However, upon clicking the app, Riddle realized he had received a new notification which was strange, he doesn’t recall posting any new notes recently, or anything that would warrant Cater’s unique comments and replies in general.

He opened the app only to see a new follower.

@floyyyyyd.leech followed you.

Slightly taken aback, Riddle clicked on the merman’s profile. For some reason he hadn’t expect Floyd to follow him on Magicam. Not because he thought Floyd wasn’t active on social media, he was sure Floyd had his fair share of fun, but rather it was because his own page was extremely boring, especially to Floyd. A page just filled with notes and studying surely wouldn’t interest the merman…

Curious, Riddle clicked back on Floyd’s page, to see what the latter had posted. Contrary to Riddle’s belief, Floyd only had four posts. The first was a selfie with Jade, probably from when they were back in Middle School. It was a photo of Floyd and Jad above the sea, pointing at what seemed to be a ship that was sailing towards them. Floyd and Jade were both smirking in that photo, just one look and Riddle knew they were up to no good. The housewarden chuckled, before scrolling to the next photo. This time, it was a photo of Azul, Jade and Floyd posing in front of what seemed to be a bootcamp. Azul stood in the middle, while the twins stood by his side. Floyd was the only one holding a peace sign up, while Jade just held his hands together at his front, and Azul had his arms crossed. The photo was captioned, “Learning 2 walk ✌️🧜‍♂️”. It seemed that this bootcamp was the one that helped teach the merfolk the ways of those on land.

Riddle continued to scroll to the next photo. This time, it was a mirror selfie. Riddle looked closer at his phone, he had never seen Floyd in this outfit before. The merman was wearing what seemed to be a dark denim set, matching jeans and a jacket, with a simple white undershirt. He had a belt wrapped around his waist, one with a moray eel as it’s buckle. His hair was slicked back, revealing a forehead. The merman was obviously smirking, Riddle could tell even if the phone screen was blocking his face. Riddle could see how his long fingers covered most of the phone’s surface area, making the technology look especially miniature in his hands. The jeans had not only accentuated his long legs, but the belt helped show off his waist perfectly. The post was captioned, “landfolk fashion rocks 🥇🥇”

In simple words, Floyd looked hot. Blushing, Riddle decided to continue scrolling to Floyd’s latest post. This one, unlike the previous ones, didn’t have Floyd in it. In fact, it didn’t have a single person in it. Instead, it was a photo of a singular rose, the same one Floyd had been admiring in Heartslabyul’s garden. The photo was captioned with only a single word, “strong”. Surprised, Riddle stared at the photo, he didn’t expect Floyd to post a flower like this, it was so out of his aesthetic. He then noticed a comment below the post.

@jade.l: Is the flower strong or is the person who's gonna kill you strong?

@floyyyyyd.leech: @jade.l y can’t it be both 🤷‍♂️

Riddle chuckled, so he realized that Riddle wouldn’t be happy with him posting his flowers without permission. Well, atleast, post realizing his own feelings Riddle would. The current Riddle felt a bit prideful seeing the rose. Satisfied, he clicked like on Jade’s comment before swiping back at Floyd’s profile page. He realized he never took note of what Floyd’s profile photo was. Bringing his phone closer to his face, he focused his eyes on the small icon inside his phone. It seemed like Floyd’s profile was a pair of roller skates.

As Riddle was still trying to make out the design of the skates, his phone vibrated, signaling a message he had just received.

floyd 🏀

so u can like jade’s comment but u can’t follow me back :/

Surprised, Riddle momentarily jolted. He wasn’t expecting Floyd to message him directly.

Riddle Rosehearts

I apologize. I will follow you back right now.

floyd 🏀

:D

Riddle Rosehearts

You didn’t have as many photos as I was expecting.

floyd 🏀

u thinking abt me goldfishie? ;)

Riddle blushed. Of course the merman could still make Riddle flustered.

Riddle Rosehearts

I was just saying that I expected you to have more photos.

Anyways, are you coming tonight?

floyd 🏀

nah im not showing up tdy

Riddle Rosehearts

I see.

Disappointed, Riddle sighed before typing again.

Riddle Rosehearts

Then I shall head to bed.

floyd 🏀

ehhhh u disappointed or smth Goldfishie??? heh

don’t worry bby it’s only for today ;)

Color immediately rushed to Riddle’s face once more, just how bold could Floyd act! This was absolutely preposterous! Riddle shut his phone and shoved it back into the drawer. Riddle walked over to his bed, throwing the blankets over himself. He tried to shut his eyes, but the pounding in his chest was too loud to focus on the silence of his room.

Just then, a knock was heard at his door. He suspected Ace had gotten into trouble again somewhere. Sighing he got up to open his door, but to his surprise, it wasn’t the freshmen he was expecting, rather the tall lanky merman he had just been fawning over.

“Suprise!” Floyd whispered, holding up a tea set.

“Floyd?!?” Riddle yelled, taken aback by the former’s appearance. “What are you doing here? I thought you said you couldn’t make it.”

“Yeah I said today. Now it’s tomorrow.” The merman casually said, before making his way into Riddle’s room.

“What?” Riddle was cut off as Floyd sat at his desk, and started pouring him a cup of tea. “Floyd! Do you have any idea what time it is? Why in the Twisted Wonderland are you drinking tea–” Riddle suddenly stopped, realizing what Floyd was doing.

Rule 703: Anyone who comes in second in a croquet tournament must serve the queen tea the next day.

Riddle had won, Floyd had come in second. Floyd was serving the queen tea. Only Floyd could be so spontaneous to pick midnight to serve Riddle tea. Sighing, he made his way over to the basketball player while smiling. “I trust that it’s herbal?”

“Of course! Here ya go. Careful, it’s hot.” Floyd handed a cup to Riddle.

“Sevens, Floyd. This really isn’t time to be drinking tea.”

“Heh. Did you really think I wasn’t gonna come? I’d never do that to you, Goldfishie.” Riddle said nothing in reply. He just continued to sip on his tea. Yes, his heart was pounding, but that was overshadowed by the comfort of Floyd’s consideration.

Riddle slept wonderfully that night, afterall, the merman’s presence was just the correct type of melatonin to combat the caffeine he had just ingested.

𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟

Riddle dropped his pen, eyes widening in shock, yelling. “What? Say that again! Right now!”

“Eep! Azul Ashengrotto has overblotted!” Squealed the Heartslabyul student.

What?” Riddle stood up immediately. “Call Trey and have him handle the rest of my affairs. I am headed to Octavinelle. Do not, and I repeat, do not follow me. Have Cater do an attendance check. Our student’s safety takes first priority.” He ordered, making his way out of Heartslabyul’s lounge.

“Yes, Housewarden!”

Riddle Rosehearts did not run in the hallways. He never ran, he would never violate the school rules like that. This was simply him speedwalking, the click of his heels echoing loudly across the walls. His heart was pounding furiously, what had happened? Another overblot? And more importantly, Floyd. Just as he was about to reach the hall of mirrors, a voice called out to him.

“Rosehearts!” Riddle turned his head, it was Crowley.

“Headmage. I am ready to head over to Octavinelle to help alleviate the situa–” Riddle was cut off by Crowley’s hands on his shoulders.

“No, no, instead I need you to bring these students here to the nurse and have them checked up, then you can bring them to your dorm to keep them protected for now.” Crowley said. Riddle’s eyes widened.

“But headmage, I believed it would be best if I went to Octavinelle directly, I have also overblotted once before, I could help–”

“Rosehearts, these students need a check up. Now.” Riddle looked over to the group of Octavinelle students behind Crowley, most of them were shaking, and one was even unconscious. Riddle looked back at the headmage, and nodded, before commanding.

“All students follow me! March in singular file and those who need help pair up with someone else.” Before turning away from the mirror portals, and making his way to the nurse.

By the time every student had been thoroughly assessed and dealt with, Riddle received word that Leona and other members of Savanaclaw had helped deal with Azul, successfully subjugating him. The housewarden had now been transported to the emergency ward. Sighing, Riddle got up, ensuring that every student present could safely return to their dorm before making his way back to Heartslabyul.

Upon entering the mirror, he was immediately met with his vice, face full of worry.

“Riddle! Are you alright? Is Azul okay now?”

Riddle sighed. “I am fine Trey, thank you for asking. Azul has been transported to the emergency room.” He continued walking past Trey.

“I–I see.” said the green head.

“I am tired now. I will retire to my room. I trust you have sorted everything out?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” Riddle made a beeline for his own room, ignoring everyone in the process.

By the time Riddle had finished freshening up, the sky had already turned dark. He sat at the edge of his bed. Once was fine, twice was already concerning enough but three times? Him, Leona, and now Azul? Just what in the sevens was happening? Riddle’s stomach started to churn. Something dark started pooling inside of Riddle’s stomach, one that made him want to throw up. Standing up, he put on his slippers and made his way out of the dorm, and into Octavinelle’s.

Only when he stepped into the dorm, did he realize that he had no idea how to navigate the place. Luckily however, he found one of their students wandering the halls. Riddle confidently walked up to the pacing freshmen, before asking.

“Excuse me, do you know where I can find….”

Floyd laid at the edge of his bed, hands above his eyes. He was still in his dorm uniform, not bothering to change out of it. He weakly raised his own hand, staring at his fingers. It had been awhile since he had fought in his merman form. Sighing, he let go of all the strength in his hand, letting it drop by his side. Grumbling, Floyd sat up, pulling the blue locks out of his hair, he had been the cause of Azul’s overblot. If only Floyd could just shut up for once in his life.

“Y'know, Azul, I never saw you as lame before. But now? The way you're actin' is pretty lame.”

It was because of his words that pushed Azul over the edge. That was obviously a lie, how could Azul ever be lame? Why did Floyd even have to say it? Sighing, Floyd leaned his head on the wall, staring at the waning moon. Then suddenly a knock was heard at his door. Floyd ignored it, he wasn’t in the mood to deal with any weaklings tonight. But then they knocked again. Floyd still didn’t answer. After a minute of silence, Floyd thought that the pest had finally left, only to hear the click of his door followed by a creak.

“Pardon me for intruding, but I had a feeling you weren’t planning on inviting me in anytime soon.” Floyd’s eyes widened upon realizing who it was.

“Goldfishie?”

“Floyd.” Riddle started walking up to the merman.

“I don’t wanna talk to you today.” Floyd said, looking away. The housewarden paused, a pang in his heart. He took a breath in before continuing to make his way towards the taller boy. He stopped just as he stood in front of Floyd, who was still sitting at the edge of his bed. Floyd didn’t bother looking up, his face still listless, eyes focused on the ground. Then suddenly, he felt a gentle palm hold both sides of his cheeks, as they tilted his head upwards. Floyd stared into Riddle’s eyes, before he could see them soften.

“Thank Sevens you are unharmed.” Riddle sighed. Floyd didn’t reply. He didn’t know what to say. “How are you feeling, Floyd? Talk me through it.” Floyd sighed, leaning in to his Goldfishie’s touch.

“I dunno.” He said, trying his best to avoid any real talk about his feelings, until he looked back up at Riddle’s eyes, staring straight at him, unwavering. Floyd gulped. “I feel scared.” He continued. “But not scared like I’m about to be eaten or anything. I, I–” Floyd started trembling. Riddle’s face softened, as he bent his knees to bring his face closer to the merman.

“It’s okay. Take your time, I’ll be here.” Floyd brought his index finger to hook onto Riddle’s pinky, similar to how their pinkies were linked back in Crewel’s class.

Floyd took a deep breath in. “I’m scared I’m gonna lose Azul and Jade. I fucked up Goldfishie.” Floyd’s voice was now bordering the brink of shakiness and a light sob. “I told Azul things I didn’t mean. I, I basically caused his whole overblot! Yes he’s okay now, but who in the world would wanna stay with me after I did all that? And Jade too, theres–” Floyd started panting, grasping for air, Riddle’s grip tightened. “Jade he’s–he’s gonna leave me.” Tears had started to drip from Floyd’s face. “He would wanna stay with Azul.”

Riddle took one hand off of Floyd’s face, to intertwine their fingers together. “Floyd.” He said softly, causing the red eyed merman to look back up at him. Riddle had never seen Floyd like this before, usually the latter only reacted emotionally in anger. To see him in sadness was one that pained Riddle immensely. With a throbbing chest, Riddle used his other hand to wipe Floyd’s tears. “Floyd, how could anyone bear to leave someone with a heart so big?” Riddle could hear Floyd choke. “I heard octopuses have three hearts, while moray eels only have one. But for what you lack in quantity, you make up for in quality.” Floyd started sobbing again, Riddle tightened his fingers around Floyd’s own. “I have never, ever, met someone with a heart as big as yours, Floyd. You show love so freely. You talk about Jade whenever you get the chance, you think of him even as you visit my gardens. I can see the love you try to disguise within your disgust when you talk about his love for mushrooms. As for Azul, you say that your bond is nothing more than that of a mutual benefit, but I am very sure that it stretches beyond ‘reciprocity’. You love him just as much. Is you risking your life to help him overcome his overblot not enough evidence to prove that? Floyd Leech you make everyone around you feel so loved, Azul, Jade” And me. Riddle left that part unsaid. “How could you even believe that for the slightest moment, they could ever leave you?” Tears were still coming out of Floyd’s eyes, Riddle could hear the soft sobs leave his mouth every few seconds. The housewarden smiled, ignoring the pain in his own chest. He leaned down to circle his arms around Floyd’s neck. Floyd continued to cry into his shoulders, hands coming up to grip his small back.

After a few minutes, Floyd had finally calmed down, only the occasional hiccups were heard. By the half an hour mark, the two had been hugging in complete silence, neither bothering to move. Just then, Floyd spoke in a soft voice. “Do you think they’ll be okay?”

Riddle huffed, “Have more faith in your housewarden and brother, would you?” He squeezed Floyd tighter, only for Floyd to squeeze back. “They’re strong.”

“I know. They’re right behind you, Goldfishie.” Floyd grinned. Riddle’s heart warmed, it seemed the taller boy was finally returning back to his old self. “Ahhhh, Goldfishie is just so strong. I can’t keep up.” Floyd flopped back onto his bed, pulling Riddle with him so that the shorter boy landed right on his chest. “I just can’t win against you, can I?” Riddle, confused, didn’t really understand what Floyd meant, however, he could tell the boy was in a much better mood compared to before, so he smiled back at the merman. Just then, Riddle could see it, in fact, he could almost feel it, with his hand being just above Floyd’s chest. Floyd’s ears started turning red, and his pupils were shaking, Floyd Leech was wavering. Riddle must’ve imagined the pounding beneath his palm. “Seriously!” Floyd pulled Riddle up to his face, squeezing his waist tightly. Riddle was taken by surprise, however he didn’t protest, letting Floyd act as he wanted. Riddle stared at Floyd, the sight squeezing his heart.

The merman was looking back at him, smiling so wide it reached his still slightly red and dry eyes, there were dried up tear streaks that had traced his face, his cheeks and ears just slightly red. Riddle could feel his face heat up. “Thank you for seeing me, Goldfishie.” Floyd grinned. Riddle smiled back at Floyd, eyes softening. Floyd’s eyes widened, before he rested his head back on the bed. “Ah. I think I just discovered my one and only weakness.”

Riddle let out a huff, sitting back up. “What are you even talking about now?” Floyd just smiled back at him. “Are you feeling better now?” Riddle asked softly.

“Yeah.” Floyd breathed back.

“Then I should probably take my leave, Jade will come back soon.” Riddle got off Floyd’s bed, dusting the invisible dust off of himself. Just as he was about to walk off however, a hand reached out to grab his. Riddle looked back, tilting his head.

“Wait, can’t you stay?” Floyd pouted, his heterochromatic eyes staring back at Riddle’s. The housewarden felt a squeeze in his heart. His eyes involuntarily softened, as he replied back.

“Okay.” And without any warning, Riddle was pulled back into Floyd’s embrace, as the merman repositioned the both of them so that they were lying properly on the bed.

“Thank you, Goldfishie.” He softly smiled, before whispering. “I don’t think I can handle being alone tonight.” Riddle said nothing, he only turned towards Floyd, hands circling his back to start patting it, attempting to comfort the taller boy once more. That night Riddle and Floyd fell asleep, limbs entirely entangled. No one would ever know of it. It was a secret safe from the rest of the world, assuming that Jade’s phone wasn’t considered human.

Riddle cleared his throat, nervously speaking. “I’m sorry Floyd, I didn’t quite catch that, could you repeat what you said one more time?” This was a blatant lie, Riddle clearly heard every word Floyd had said, he just couldn’t believe it.

“I’ll host the tea party next week Wednesday, so I’m inviting ya and all yer little soldiers to join.” Floyd repeated. This was the first ever time Riddle had been invited to a party that was outside of his own dorm.

Rule 25: There must always be a tea party on the 5th day of every month.

Next Wednesday was November 5th. It was also the Leech twin’s birthdays. “I see. Then of course, I’ll be there. I will call the rest of my dorm members too.” Floyd immediately brightened up, smiling, causing Riddle’s heart to skip a beat.

“Yay! See ya then, Goldfishie!” He said before he walked off.

A birthday party…

Riddle needed to find Floyd a gift, a proper gift. One the merman was sure to like. That should be easy, Riddle thought, he knew Floyd quite well after all.

It was in fact not lemon squeezy like Riddle had predicted. Five days had gone by and Riddle was still empty handed. He was the only one in his dorm who was attending the party that still didn’t have a gift. Ace, Deuce, Cater and even Trey had all prepared small presents for the twins. Ace had prepared a sash for Floyd, one that said “Basketball ACE”, he thought it was hilarious. For Jade, he simply prepared a pair of sturdy gloves, one that he claimed was perfect for mountain climbing. Deuce had prepared a tub of hair gel for Floyd, for when he was parkouring, to ensure that his hair wasn’t blocking his eyesight. For Jade, he prepared a hoe. After hearing that mushrooms also required certain gardening tools, the freshmen brought out what he claimed to be the most useful tool of all. Riddle highly doubted that, but as he wasn’t so well versed in the act of gardening, he had no choice but to let it slide. Trey had bought a takoyaki maker for the taller twin, hearing that he had a liking for them. Whereas he bought a Clover shaped glass jar for Jade, something to help preserve his mushrooms. Riddle hadn’t gotten the chance to ask Cater what he had bought for the twins yet, but he suspected it was new dancing shoes for Floyd, one that he picked out from his own experience as a member from his club, and a mushroom decorated tote bag for his brother.

Riddle sat in the Heartslabyul lounge, contemplating his own gifts. He had already decided on his present for Jade, it was a quill and ink set. Knowing that Jade takes his duties as the vice leader of Octavinelle seriously, as well as a member of Mostro Lounge’s management team, Riddle believed that this gift would be perfect for the merman. For Floyd however, Riddle was constantly torn between the many possible options. Should he get him new skates? But that felt too materialistic, as if Riddle was trying to win Floyd’s favour. Or perhaps a desk toy? But what would Floyd need a desk toy for? Frustrated, Riddle let out a low grumble. He decided that sitting here mulling over the possible present ideas was useless, he was getting nowhere. Riddle got up, deciding to take a stroll around the campus to refresh his own mind.

After walking for half an hour, Riddle found himself in front of the school library. He decided to step in, understanding that distracting his mind from the issue at hand might help in figuring out a gift. Without thinking too hard, Riddle grabbed one of the hard cover books, before making his way to his usual spot in the corner of the library. However, instead of being met with an empty table, Riddle found a sleeping body sprawled across the table, one that currently belonged to the man who dominated Riddle’s heart.

Floyd was asleep in the library, on Riddle’s usual table, in his usual chair. Riddle smiled, before taking a seat next to the sleeping merman. How oddly nostalgic this scene was, he thought. Then, a bright picture engulfed Riddle’s mind, following that was an glimpse of Floyd’s wide smile. Riddle’s eyes widened, he finally knew what to get Floyd. Quickly, Riddle stood up, determined to get the present for Floyd. However, instead of leaving immediately, Riddle paused, glancing back at the sleeping merman.

Floyd’s cheek was pressed against the wooden table, his bangs falling into his face. Gently, Riddle brushed the hair out of Floyd’s face, before leaning in and giving the boy a quick peck on the forehead. Riddle shot back up, face completely red, before he ran (speedwalked) his way out of the library. After Riddle had left the library, Floyd slowly opened his eyes, bringing a hand to hold his forehead, specifically the place Riddle had just kissed. His eyes were wide open, a rare expression of shock on his face, before he gently smiled, looking out the window to the setting sun.

“Goldfishie! You made it!” Floyd was wearing a matching birthday sash with Jade. Contrary to his usual dorm attire, he was instead wearing a white blazer with black slacks, and in perfect Floyd fashion, his undershirt wasn’t tucked in and the first two buttons of his shirt weren’t buttoned.

“Floyd, Happy Birthday.” Riddle said calmly, not rejecting the hug Floyd gave him. “I hope we aren’t too late.”

“Nonesense! You’re just on time, Riddle-san” Azul walked up to them, greeting his fellow housewarden.

“Azul, greetings. Where is Jade?” Azul furrowed his eyebrows.

“Why do you always assume Jade is with me? He could be anywhere, hmph.” Azul crossed his arms. Then suddenly, as if magic, the merman popped out behind Azul, hands massaging his shoulders.

“Now, no need to get so grumpy. I’ve returned. Why hello Riddle, nice to see you here. I assume Floyd invited you? That would definitely explain the floral choices.” Azul jumped, the sudden appearance of Jade scaring him.

“Flowers?” Riddle asked, before looking around. It was true, contrary to Octavinelle’s underwater color scheme, today’s floral arrangements were a mix of both aquatic sea plants, along with the subtle integration of red and white roses.

Rule 469: When throwing a party for new friends, one must decorate with both red and white roses.

Riddle smiled, even on a day as important as this, Floyd still remembered to implement the Queen of Heart’s rules. Riddle looked back towards the Octavinelle pair, “Happy Birthday Jade. I wish you the merriest of days.” Jade looked over to Riddle, placing one hand on his chest before smiling back.

“Thank you very much, Riddle. But my, where are our manners? Floyd, let’s bring our guests to their table, shall we?” Jade nodded at Floyd.

“Ehhh, then, you’re sitting with me, Goldfishie!”

Riddle smiled. “Of course.” He replied, before letting himself be dragged off by Floyd.

The party itself was quite satisfactory. Although the traditions differed by Heartslabyul’s tea parties by quite a margin, Riddle still found himself enjoying the party. Floyd had even managed to convince him to join the dance floor, who knew merfolk liked to slow dance on their birthdays? Riddle had even caught a glimpse of a blushing Azul, who looked as if he was reluctantly pulled onto the dance floor by Jade. Of course, he never really had time to relish in the sight, too busy dealing with his own blushing face, as he was practically being manhandled by Floyd. The merman had a certainly unique style of doing the waltz, once every few moves or so adding a little twist of his own. Simply put, Riddle was having fun.

Then came the presents. Unlike his calm demeanor on the outside, Riddle’s heart was speedwalking (it was absolutely racing inside his chest) waiting for Floyd to reach his gift.

“A takoyaki maker! Sweet! M gonna try so many new flavors with this thing! Thanks, Sea turtle.” Floyd glanced over to Trey, holding the box up to show the junior. Trey only smiled back.

“This is a lovely glass jar, Trey-san. I assume that it’s your family’s?” Jade asked.

Trey brought a hand up to itch the back of his neck, a habit he had implemented during the times he felt awkward. “Uh, yeah. We usually use it to preserve our dry ingredients, but I thought it would also make for good use as a terrarium. Glad you guys like it.” Jade only smiled in return.

“Now, I believe it’s time for…”

“Goldfishie!” Floyd brightened up, immediately reaching out for the gift wrapped box placed in front of him. Jade held his hand out in front of Floyd, preventing him from reaching for the gift any further.

“Floyd, I thought we agreed on this. You opened Trey-san’s present first last time, so now it’s my turn to open the gift first.”

“Behh.” Floyd slouched back onto the couch, crossing his arms, but still complying with Jade’s words. Jade carefully took out the gift box. It was enclosed in a black wrapping paper, with a red bow tied to it. He took his time unwrapping the gift, first untying the bow, then methodologically tearing through the paper. Once he finally opened the gift, his eyes widened in surprise, taking the set out.

“Oh my, this is incredibly considerate of you.” Jade looked at Riddle. “Thank you so much, Riddle.” The merman said sincerely. Riddle felt a prideful smile building on his face.

“Of course, as your fellow classmate and a housewarden, it would be shameful for me to get anything less.” He said as he raised his arms to his chest. Then, he glanced back at Floyd who was still slouching on the couch.

“Floyd, you can open your gift now.” Azul pointed out. There was a beat of silence in the room before Floyd replied.

“Nah.” Riddle’s heart dropped. Had Floyd not wanted to see what Riddle had got him? Was he not even worth the effort? Just then, a certain blue headed freshman stood up, followed by his fellow friend.

“How dare you disrespect our Housewarden like this! You’re really asking for it aren’t you–”

“Deuce, stop it. If he doesn’t want to, then don’t force him. It is his birthday afterall.” Riddle felt a throb in his heart, just why was the merman blatantly rejecting him like this? He looked away from Floyd, not daring to make eye contact with him. Floyd on the other hand, looked over to Ace and Deuce.

“Moray eels are scared at heart. They’d never reveal their weakness to the public so openly.” He said, before standing up. Jade, now smirking, stood up, following his brother. “M hungry, let’s eat cake!” Riddle could feel the lump in his throat, unable to continue speaking. He could feel a hand come up to his back, gently patting it. He looked up to see Cater’s smiling face, silently comforting him. Riddle took a deep breath in, collecting himself, before standing up and following the crowd.

“Thank you.” He silently whispered to Cater.

Once the party was over, Riddle quickly excused himself back to his own room. Yet before he had any time to wallow in his own sadness, a knock was heard at his door. He took a deep breath in, he couldn’t risk showing such a vulnerable side to his dormmates, especially as the housewarden. Riddle slowly opened it, revealing the one person he hadn’t expected to see that night—the very person who had been in this room more times than anyone else, second only to Riddle himself.

“Floyd. What are you doing here?” Riddle said coldly. Floyd flinched, it had been awhile since he heard that tone. Sighing, he brought his hands behind his back, revealing a gift box wrapped in white and red paper, adorned with a checkered bow.

“I wanted to open your present together, just the two of us.” Riddle was taken aback, was this why Floyd chose to humiliate him in front of everybody back at the party? Torn between anger and his own feelings, Riddle stood there frozen, unable to respond. Floyd, seeing this, reached out to Riddle’s hands and hooked their pinkies together.

“Sorry, I know what I did was embarrassing. You can hate me for it, you don’t have to forgive me. I didn’t want to share something so precious with others so easily like this. After this, I can get out and leave, I won’t bother you again, but just for this moment, could we open your present together?” Floyd asked, staring into Riddle’s eyes. Riddle could see the slight tremble on his lips. Sighing, Riddle replied back.

“Floyd, while I was greatly hurt by your actions at the party just now, you don’t have to cut yourself off like that. A simple apology and explanation would’ve been enough, and that is exactly what you have given me.” Riddle tightened his pinky, before smiling and Floyd. “You are much more precious to me than you think. Come in, I would love to see you unbox my gift.” Floyd brightened up immediately, before making his way into Riddle’s bed, sitting at the corner of his bed. The merman then beckoned Riddle to come closer, causing a chuckle to escape the housewarden’s mouth.

Silently, Floyd took his time unveiling Riddle’s gift one by one. In contrast from his earlier rash actions, including ripping the wrapping paper with the bow still on it aggressively, he was much more gentle with Riddle’s gift. Almost as if he was imitating Jade’s movements. Once Floyd had finally successfully removed all the wrapping paper without causing a single tear, he opened the box, eyes widening in the process. Riddle looked away, ears red and his heart pounding. Slowly, Floyd lifted up the frame, turning back to Riddle, then to the frame again.

Riddle had gifted Floyd a painting, one that displayed the very same image of the library table the two had so often met at. There was a warm sunlight that reached beyond the glass window, creating sparkles of dust as it was met with the tattered oak of the table. Riddle had painted every small detail of it, even the cracks and moldy bits. The painting was devoid of any human subject, only a window, the sun, and a table. Yet who knew, these worn out objects could be so warm? So loving? Goldfishie was so easily able to encapsulate all of Floyd’s feelings in just one singular photo. Had he realized that this was the exact place Floyd had fallen for Riddle? Floyd felt so overwhelmed looking at the photo. Then, he noticed a small tag peaking out from the corners. He slowly reached out to straighten it, reading it’s message.

Your love feels like the warmth of the sun. Thank you for seeing me.”

Floyd said nothing, he only continued to stare at the picture. Riddle could hear the pounding in his chest become louder and louder. Yet the silence only grew. It was then, that Floyd started murmuring something. “Thank god I kept your present for last.”

Then, suddenly, Floyd whipped his head over to Riddle, eyes still wide, not even blinking. Riddle jumped in surprise.

“Goldfishie, what’s rule 53?”

“Stolen items must be replaced.” Riddle replied without missing a beat.

Floyd grinned, “So, where’s my stolen heart?”

“Huh?” Riddle furrowed his eyebrows, pausing before continuing. “I don’t ever recall taking a deck of cards from you, let alone a hearts.”

“Awh Goldfishie you’re no fun.” Floyd pouted. “What I meant to say is,” He reached out to pull one of Riddle’s hands to his own chest, so that Riddle could feel the fast beat of the merman’s heart. “This heart right here. You stole it. Y’know what that means right?” Riddle blushed furiously, he couldn’t tell whether there was more heat building in his face, or on his palm

“...I know.”

Floyd leaned in, still holding Riddle’s hand to his own chest. “So, whaddya say, Goldfishie? You gonna give me your heart in return for my stolen one?” Riddle only nodded, face still beet red. Floyd brought his hand out to hook his pinky onto Riddle’s. “Thank you for returning the warmth of the sun back to me, Goldfishie.” Floyd leaned in to kiss Riddle.

A minute had passed, they were still kissing. A minute became two, then it became three, and just as it was about to become four, Riddle pushed Floyd away.

“F–Floyd! Stop!”

“Goldfishie. That was also my first kiss. You stole it. Ya have ta return it now.” Floyd said before leaning back in. Riddle could barely hear Floyd over the pounding of his own chest. Instead, he brought his hands up to hold Floyd’s lips, preventing him from kissing him any further.

“Calm down Floyd! And for your information that was mine to!” Floyd smirked, before he poked his tongue out to lick Riddle’s hands, causing the boy to yank them away. This time, Riddle became red from his face all the way to his hands. “W–what in the Twisted Wonderland are you doing?!?” Floyd leaned in, smirking.

“Hey.” He said. “Why the library?” Riddle went silent, before slowly replying.

“It’s nothing.”

“Whyyy, tell me Goldfishie.” Floyd whined.

“F-Fine! Okay!” Riddle collected himself, straightening out his shirt. “I saw you sleeping there the other day and I just thought…” He trailed off. Floyd tilted his head in confusion.

“I just thought I would love to spend the rest of my life like this. You sleeping by my side, at peace, while I read my thoughts.” Riddle quietly said, now shaking from embarrassment, his entire face was blushing profusely. Floyd’s cheek started to tint as well, but he only continued smiling, before reaching out to embrace the housewarden in his arms.

“If you’d have me, I’d want to spend even my waking moments by your side, Goldfishie. Not just when I’m asleep.” Riddle returned the hug.

“Yeah.” Floyd once again caught Riddle’s lips. Riddle Rosehearts has never made out in his life, and he had definitely never planned to especially during highschool, but the moment he felt Floyd's tongue lick his own lips, he had never had bigger regrets for not kissing Floyd sooner in life.

“Hey.”

“What is it, Floyd?” Riddle asked, obviously annoyed that the merman stopped kissing him.

“My toothpaste flavor is lemon. Does that mean I get to be your post meal beverage for the day?” Riddle paused, before bursting out in laughter.

“Nice try Floyd, unfortunately I don’t think your lips count as a ‘beverage’. Don’t think I’d compromise the rules, even for you Mr Leech! …I do however expect you to be sharing my herbal teas with me from now on.” Riddle looked away, ears red.

Floyd smiled, knowing exactly what Riddle was referring to. “I’d be glad to.” He said, before pulling the housewarden back in for a kiss.
